🌺 Mahalo Nui to all of our partners who gave a send off to our Coalition Coordinator,Sally Ancheta, today at our October General Meeting! After more than 20 years of service, Sally is preparing to conclude her time with the Hawaiʻi Public Health Institute at the end of October.

From tobacco prevention and policy advocacy to healthy communities and substance use prevention, Sally has dedicated her career to building relationships, bringing people together, and supporting healthier communities across Hawaiʻi Island.
Her work helped shape important public health efforts, including Hawaiʻi County’s Tobacco 21 policy, and her lasting impact can be seen in the many community members, partners, and coalitions she has worked alongside over the years.

Most of all, Sally leaves behind a legacy built on relationships, collaboration, and a deep commitment to the communities she serves.

💛 Mahalo nui loa, Sally, for your years of service, leadership, and dedication. We wish you all the best in your next chapter!

Alcohol marketing is designed to sell a lifestyle—not the consequences.

Advertising and promotional content often link alcohol with fun, celebration, connection, and success, while the risks are far less visible. Research suggests that repeated exposure to alcohol marketing can influence attitudes toward drinking and contribute to the perception that alcohol is a normal, low-risk part of everyday life—particularly among young people.

The reality is that alcohol can impair judgment, reaction time, and decision-making well before someone feels “drunk.” That’s why 0.05 saves lives.

Before your first drink, make a plan. Choose a sober driver, book a rideshare, or stay the night. One decision can protect your life—and someone else’s.

Research has consistently found that greater exposure to alcohol marketing is associated with earlier initiation of drinking and increased alcohol use among young people (World Health Organization; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

💙 Happy Father’s Day to all the incredible dads and father figures in our community!

As you celebrate today, remember that alcohol can begin affecting driving skills at a 0.05% BAC, impacting reaction time, coordination, and decision-making.

Take our poll in the graphic:
❓ Did you know impairment can start at 0.05% BAC?

Whether you’re grilling, gathering with family, or enjoying a special meal, make a plan for a safe ride home. The best Father’s Day gift is being present for the moments that matter.

👨‍👧‍👦 Wishing all dads a safe, happy, and memorable Father’s Day!

A new study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that after Utah lowered its blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit for drivers from 0.08 to 0.05, alcohol-related crash deaths declined significantly more than in neighboring states. 📊 Key Findings:
✅ Utah saw larger reductions in alcohol-related traffic fatalities after the law took effect in 2018.
✅ Non-alcohol-related crash deaths did not show the same change.
✅ The impact extended beyond drivers near the 0.05 limit, suggesting a broader deterrent effect on drinking and driving.

🚨 Why It Matters:
Alcohol-impaired driving remains a major public health concern. In 2023 alone, 12,429 people in the U.S. died in crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver. Over the past decade, alcohol-related crashes accounted for nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities.

🌎 Global research has consistently shown that lowering BAC limits to 0.05 can reduce alcohol-related injuries and deaths by 11% or more.

💬 Researchers say Utah’s experience provides strong evidence that stricter impaired-driving laws can change behavior, prevent crashes, and save lives.

💡 Prevention works. Policies that encourage safer choices behind the wheel can protect drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and entire communities.

The coming together of our people and the community to shed light on matters such as leading with Aloha, impaired driving, and violence awareness on a more continuous basis will significantly persuade change. There are genuinely good people out there who care. Attempting to respond and resolve said issues by implementing Aloha at the core of it all. The world is watching us, and we’re leading the example through every trial and tribulation tossed our way.
