After 14+ years working in Maryland’s public sector, across Prince George’s, Howard, and now Anne Arundel Counties, I’ve attended my share of MACo Summer Conferences.

But this year felt different.

I came to Ocean City with both the perspective of a county administrator and the perspective of someone preparing to serve in elected office. That gave me a different lens on the conversations about what counties are facing and the work ahead for both Howard County and Anne Arundel County.

This year’s theme, “Build What’s Next,” felt especially relevant. We cannot build stronger communities in silos. Counties sit at the center of so much of what shapes daily life: schools and public facilities, housing, water and infrastructure, transportation, energy, economic development, and increasingly, the challenges presented by data centers and a changing electric grid.

Good local government requires us to see the bigger picture and understand how decisions about land use, infrastructure, housing, transportation, sustainability, and economic development connect to one another and affect people’s everyday lives.

And MACO is always a great opportunity to reconnect with friends and former colleagues from across Maryland.

I left Ocean City with a lot of ideas, conversations to continue, and an even greater appreciation for the work ahead.

On Monday, Alphas from all over Maryland descended upon Annapolis for “Alpha Night in Annapolis.” We had a great time connecting with our brother @govwesmoore, fellowshipping with our elected officials, and observing a senate session.

For our entire history, we have valued participation in the election and legislative processes. The brothers of @pul1906 are proud to show strong.

Another year, another summer Maryland Association of Countied (MACo)!

I had the honor of moderating the panel, "The Bottom Line on Green Spaces: ROI of Parks and Recreation," focused on parks as powerful economic drivers, and not just community amenities or environmental stewardship projects.

From boosting property values to reducing healthcare costs and attracting new residents, strategic investment in these assets can yield impressive returns for counties of all sizes. The panel explored how parks and recreation programs contribute to economic development and focused on proven methods for measuring and communicating both the tangible and intangible benefits of these programs.

As @govwesmoore mentioned at the closing reception, it is a difficult time to be a public servant. Now more than ever, grounded steady leadership is needed in government to protect our democracy but, most importantly, to protect our most precious commodity: our people.

I look forward to being that steady leader who protects Marylanders.

I had a great time celebrating summer with the sisters of the Prince George's Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. at their annual Summer Crab Fest. Finding time for fellowship, friendship, joy and fun is important when our community is facing tough times. We all need to fill our tank. 🎉🦀
