PERFORMING WHITE SKIN

By way of paraphrase, a mask represents an eclipse of the social being, which in this case allows the passing absence of the individual before his place in capitalist society, however this mask-eclipse does not give rise to the appearance of the hidden subjectivity of the wearer, the mask is subjectivity itself, the subjectivity of
its historical condition, as a vulnerable image, reproducible and imaginable from a place where the individual himself cannot see it.

But it is not that subversive and magical mask of the carnivals, which allows the dissolution of the individual who wears it in order to reach (even for a moment) the place of gods or demons; it is a mask that looks behind the scenes at the evolution of society and the status quo.

Performing white skin is a parody on arrogance, high academia, class difference, social position and the exercise of language to subdue the other in an unfavorable dialogue, using a model of cultural education that presumes to enunciate the truth, a truth in history.

The project proposes a reflection on the systems of social classification that promote the proclamation of superiority, exploring through masks, video and performance, a range of hierarchies in the ramification of capitalist society; a sort of lottery of the cultural system.

On the wall, Limón’s alum paintings on a variety of woods, inspired by the wardrobes, patterns, and cuts at the Parisian Atelier Caraco, where the dresses were designed.

#paris #mexico #visionesparis #arte #iztapalapa #arte #arteurbanomexico

“Le Premier Qui Rira”
(The First One to Laugh), 2012 HD Video, 9’02” / 16:9
Ten years were necessary for the Mexican artist Mauricio Limón de León (Mexico City, 1979) to produce a precise, sensitive and large-scale work about the way of living of a social group in a fragile neighborhood of Mexico City.
An iconoclastic aesthetic view oscillating between poetry and dark humor seems to be a key component in Mauricio Limón's work. Between mockery and observation of the banal, the artist invites us to reflect on the social and human condition as he wanders through an identified urban space: Iztapalapa.
