Video art pioneer Mary Lucier’s studio in upstate New York is full of archival materials, photography, video equipment and more. We recently visited her studio to discuss her upcoming show “Leaving Earth,” coming to the gallery on January 19th.

“Leaving Earth” is a multi-channel video and sound installation inspired by excerpts from the final journal of Lucier’s late husband, the painter Robert Berlind. In this journal, Berlind fearlessly documented his thoughts on his impending death from a terminal illness. The installation’s collage-like mix of images and text mirrors the fragmentation of his writings, and it also documents Lucier’s life as she navigated monumental loss.
