The genius isn’t always in knowing the answer. Sometimes, it’s knowing when and who to hand the lightsabre to.

On my deathbed, I want GeniusYou, or something like it, to be available to everyone. I set that goal at five years old, which is where the delusion stems from, but I stand by it. At 52, with maybe 40 good years left, and having delivered this work to a few hundred people so far, the maths isn't in my favour.

Being a strategist, it didn't take long to find the workaround. Youth. If I hand the lightsabre to someone like Joy, who has 80 good years ahead of her and is already doing the work, I get to nod to five-year-old me and call it done.

Joy Pillay has just turned 18, and one of the things on her to-do list was asking me to be a reference for a scholarship she was born to serve. Spending time reflecting on our work together was a gift in itself topped off with the joy of writing a letter of recommendation this week, for an incredibly switched-on young woman.

I first met Joy as an entrant in the Race Unity Speech Awards (RUSA). I help run the Auckland Heats each year, and get to take part in the National event, in whatever role they'll give me. I watched her deliver her speech at the semis, the Auckland final, and then the Nationals, right through to her win.

I really got to know her once I became her mentor, and that's when I saw the range of her properly. Every role adds another layer: finalist, national champion, mentor to other speakers, advocate for her community, and just as often, the one who steps back so someone else can shine. Ive watched her move from participant to supporter without missing a beat, and do the real work behind the scenes, not just the talking about it.

That's the genius of youth: energy, hope and idealism that hasn't been ground down yet, and time most of us have already spent. All they need from us is access to skills they haven't learned yet, and belief they haven't had the years to earn, but they truly deserve. Imagine what's possible if we hand that over early.

@mava_moayyed in her own words 🤍

Wearing her bespoke gown from January 2024, she reflects on a Hera journey shaped by true collaboration — feeling heard, understood, and seen at every step. From her first ideas through to the final creation, her vision was brought to life with care and precision.

In her gown, Mava speaks to a quiet kind of confidence — feeling like herself, only elevated. Beautiful, comfortable, and completely at ease, just as a bride should feel.

Celebrating 15 years of Hera, through the women who have been part of it ✨

She looked stunning in her bespoke gown from January 2024, and seeing her shine again reminded us why every detail in a Hera gown is designed with care. Celebrating 15 years of Hera and the team’s dedication to each bride was an absolute joy ✨

What a special day to be apart of ❤️ 15 Brides of Hera came together to celebrate 15 years of making dreams come true 💒 it’s incredible what happens when you put a bunch of strangers into a room, who have one thing in common, they wore the same designer on their special day. The chatter in the room didn’t stop all day, everyone got on like a house on fire and uplifted and empowered one another ❤️ all led by the powerhouse @katieyeung____

Hard to say goodbye to someone who has led us through the very choppy waters of change with such warmth and positivity. From Seven Sharp, to Fair Go to the new realm of digital journalism she’s risen to every challenge with grace and enthusiasm and a wonderfully steady hand. Hers are big shoes to fill, and I’ll miss her as a leader and a friend. But excited to hear where life in Oz takes you! Haere rā, ngā mihi o tō haerenga .. it’s been crazy and fun and great to share it with you!
