POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

One of the most moving musicals I've seen in a while. Such a beautiful score, played by an ensemble of actor musicians. This piece truly uses it's cast to it's full potential, whilst harmoniusly playing a variety of instruments all so beautifully.

Based on a memoir by Wladyslaw Szpilman
Directed and Adapted by Thom Sutherland
Music by Wladyslaw Szpilman
Set and Video Design by Andrzej Goudling

Starring
Dan Krikler as Wladyslaw Szpilman
Malcolm Forbes-Peckham as Pianist
Rosalind Ford as Mother
Oliver Grant as Hosenfeld
TJ Holmes as Father
Mischa Jardine as Janina
Elzbieta Kalicka as Regina
Nitai Levi as Henryk
Melania Maggiore as Halina
Oliver Magor as Ensemble
Max Roll as Gimpel/Majorek
Erin Rowlatt as Ensemble

The Pianist is based around the times of world war two in Warsaw, at its heart is the Szpilman family, all musicians but when the nazis are on the way their whole life changes, this was the time of the Holocaust were walls and this family were separated but the only thing that kept them together was music in the concert halls and candle cafes of yesteryear. It's based on Wladyslaw's real life experience of both being a composer loved by all but also being a Jewish family man trying to hide himself to just live and get by and doing anything to survive.

Let's start with the creative design of the piece, it's set design is both minimal and powerful having the piano for the majority at its centre stage with the family of actor musicians surrounding it with a hard wood back drop with musical score projected onto it. When moved it reveals further back into the set only with a few chairs and the piano to move into when the scenes upstage are prioritised. It's score is fully played by it's ensemble which makes the authenticity of the piece they more heartfelt.

Now to the performances and if theirs one thing besides how close the chemistry is between the family and how much the actor museo style relies on how great the communication between each other is that, they way Dan Krikler orchestrates the piece is wonderful to watch with even just a swift of the hand to move either performers around the stage or to start the pianist playing, the way he has such

The real- life video game @max.roll82 and I are moving to (part time) is... Graz, Austria!

As some of you may know, Max is a dual Austrian/UK citizen, but his family is from Vienna, and we had never seriously considered living anywhere besides Vienna until we were blown away by Graz in September. We still own our place in NYC, I still vote in NYC, he still works in NYC - this is part time, when we are with his family we figured we'd like to be someplace warmer (and cheaper) than London. Very few Americans have heard of it, but Graz is Austria's second city, like Chicago is to NYC. And it's so far south the climate is Mediterranean; oranges and pomegranates grow here. That's why we played the guessing game - the very Germanic clock tower and very Italian architecture exist, confusingly, in the same place.

Another important factor was where to register his Austrian vote. If you weren't aware, Nazis have been coming back to power in Austria. The FPO (freedom party Austria) was formed in the 1950s by literal, OG Nazis, so that's not a metaphor. They won the largest share of the vote in the last election. Fortunately, the Austrian government has more than 2 parties, and every other party refused to form a coalition with them, so they are currently sitting uselessly in parliament - but we can't let this get worse. If you are an Austrian Jew whose family was driven out during the Anschluss, now would be a very good time to get your citizenship restored, register to vote, and help kick the *literal, OG Nazis* out of Austria again.

And it's important that not every leftist votes in Vienna because they simply didn't consider the rest of the country. Graz is very left (although rural Styria is not) and a reason to vote here is the multi party system: smaller more progressive parties actually have a chance here. Graz is currently ruled by the Austrian communist party - not a dictatorship masquerading as communism, a democratically elected far left party who actually believes in the basic concept of "sharing," and who are capable of forming coalition with socialists and moderates. We want to be a part of establishing and sustaining real socialism.

Clue 4 of 4. Comment your guesses! This is where @max.roll82 and I will be spending our non-NYC time for the next few years and we want our friends to visit. (And help us solve puzzles.)

City, country, region, whatever you think you can guess. No Google!

Brendan (not on social media) told us the lion head on our last clue was definitely a switch but we had to turn the power on first, I realized - SHIT. the power was in here somewhere, wasn't it? There were two covered wells and a wine press. And like a thousand giant old timey doors on different floors. I didn't go up and explore thoroughly because I knew it was a whole damn dungeon level in and unto itself, and we were just trying to do the quick overview of the whole map first, so going up the hill seemed logical for a birds eye...

Answer coming in the next post. Share your guesses here if you want to play :) other clues are all very recent posts.

Learned in the comments of the last clue that the lion head definitely was a switch, but we had to turn the power on first. Dammit. Why didn't @max.roll82 and I think of that before climbing all the way up here?

Part 3 in a series of clues. Guess where this real life video game is located. No Google! I will answer any questions about this location on this post except for confirmation of an actual location name.

To @max.roll82 's credit he tried pressing the lion in the stairwell, but it wasn't a switch.

Where do you think we are? This is video 2 in a series of clues. No Google!

I highly recconmend this to anyone who doesn't stretch yet, or needs a quick full body once over wake up that doesn't take too long. It keeps working just as well when you're very active, even if you might do more on the floor afterwards for a deeper stretch and joint care. Originally filmed for my in person beginner students in NYC, now sharing for everyone!

Co-starring my husband @max.roll82 who is a recent convert to stretching himself :)

The Pianist - Rehearsals
This might be one of the best things that happened to me, in my entire life. This year has been a roller coaster, but I'm sure there's a reason why we walk the paths we're on. Somehow I got here, and I'm very grateful for it.
