Episode 2 of turning my house into a music venue…Live At The Lounge: Autumn Acoustic edition

Genuinely one of the most rewarding events I’ve hosted, bringing together friends for a series of intimate acoustic music performances. On the one stage we had everyone from first-time performers making the jump from bedroom jams, to professional musicians testing out their unreleased material.

Was good this time anchoring around a consistent musical theme, but our artists still covered a ton of terrain across pop, rock, classical, folkf electronic, emo, hip hop, and R&B, with both covers & originals!

At a personal level, was my first time performing (mid) guitar alongside vocals solo with covers of Stick Season (Noah Kahan) and Ivy (Frank Ocean); was a bit nervous trying to musically multitask but good to get the reps under the belt.

Fortunately got @brian__emo__ to jump in on the strings side for the second half of my set, and we did a melodic rework of Money Trees (Kendrick Lamar) finishing off with an original song we wrote as teenagers, Above The Water.

Much love to the preparation, courage & energy from all the performers who made the night as special as it was:

Episode 3 on the cards in winter...an R&B & hip hip showcase 👀

Final track for Live at The Lounge was a song @brian__emo__ and I made back when we were 16 for our band Karma Train

Was one of the first 3 songs I ever wrote and recorded as part of the Bondi Wave music program

The lyrics explore a monent running into someone you used to be close to, but whose whose energy has since withered away

Our other tracks from that band were pretty raw, but this one still feels like a catchy, well-structured song listening with adult ears now 🤣

Had been so long since performing it that I had to listen to the mp3 and transcribe the lyrics to remember them

Track 3 from my Live At The Lounge acoustic set was one of my fave hip hop songs of all time: Money Trees by @kendricklamar

Having trained as a singer growing up and only later fallen in love with hip hop, I’m fascinated by the combination of melody from singing and rhythm from rap.

@zheckendorf did an amazing acoustic cover of this track many years ago that struck me as a great example of nailing this melody-rhythm intersection.

So I decided to give the cover a crack myself, with @brian__emo__ effortlessly weaving in some clean strings.

During travels at the end of 2023, I reflected on this question:

“What are the things that gave me the most energy and joy growing up which I no longer have in my life?”

The 2 biggest things:

1. Team sports:

I played football from Year K for most of my time in school & uni, including running a social soccer club for fellow goobers who loved the game but weren’t the most skillful.

2. Making music:

I did vocal training, a songwriting course, choirs, rock bands & questionable Soundcloud tracks growing up + failing in a smattering of instruments. I rediscovered this passion studying at @uva and beatboxing + singing with @theflyingvsuva & @remix.uva, which led me to start @unswvocallective as the first acapella group at my uni.

But alas, I made sacrifices going into FT work while building Earlywork on the side, and soon going all in on the business.

In 2024, I reintroduced #1 by starting a social futsal team (shoutout Last Minute Lorikeets), which has been an awesome mix of exercise, play, collaboration, competitition & connection.

Reflecting on theyear, I decided it was time for #2 and wondered “How can I make music a bigger part of the community around me?”

Decided to kick things off with a bang by turning our house into a live music venue for NYE with Alex & @_lindapaints

It was really special to create a space where mates from different musical worlds could share their craft with others (heard one attendee even bought a guitar after hearing the performers!)

Shoutouts to these legends for running with the experiment:

ewan.jacob_ on vocals, acoustic guitar & loop pedal
@jayden__clark on sax
@natohutch on electric guitar & vocals
@the___admired on vocals & electric guitar
+ a surprise set from @kazbensonmusic !

Even snuck an unplanned cheeky two songs in myself after my old band mate @maxjacobson__ convinced me to perform on the night

This year, I’m keen to rediscover my love for creating & sharing music, little by little

Chuck a cheeky follow on @brocknrollmusic to follow along for singing & beatboxing shenanigans

I hope this post sparks at least one mate to ask themselves the same question and rediscover a childhood passion :)

Acoustic cover of Pompeii by @bastilledan , a 2010s banger

Clip from my NYE party where I turned my house into a live music venue

Didn’t intend to perform, but got asked on the night by my mate @maxjacobson__ to perform a cover together, having last played it together in high school a decade ago!

Definitely needed the lyrics but good fun to perform live again

Shoutout to the floor slaps from my mate Rey and @jo.tay for recording this!

That’s a bloody wrap! This headline tour has to be my favourite round of shows we’ve ever done as a band.

The tour package felt like a big family and I’m going to miss seeing everyone so frequently ❤️

Hearing the crowd sing along to all the songs, the kind words that people shared with me before and after the show, the immense support from old and new friends and the overall positivity from everyone is something I will hold close to my heart for the rest of my life.

Thank you to everyone that came to a show, you have no idea how much it meant to me 🥰

Next up, UNIFY Off The Record in Hobart and Frankston, then UK and Europe 🤯
