Trigger Warning/Graphic Pic — TBI Post

Finally found the courage to share this one. Here we go.

Most importantly, thank you to my wife, Emily. You helped saved my life and you have kept our family protected and held together the past two years despite sharing one of the intense and scary experiences we could have ever imagined.

Secondly, thank you to my friends, family, the Grand County Search & Rescue team, my ambulance drivers, doctors, surgeons, nurses, therapists, medical providers, and everyone else who played a role in putting me back together during the most difficult time of my life.

I truly wouldn’t be here without you all.

Thank you to everyone who donated, visited, called, texted, checked in, sent messages, or simply kept us in your thoughts. I may not have been able to respond to everyone at the time, but I felt the support, and it meant more than I can put into words.

Background Story - 5/25/24

While hiking near Grand Lake, Colorado, I suffered a traumatic brain injury after a large pine tree fell directly onto my head. The forest had been compromised by beetle kill, and the conditions became extremely windy. A large pine tree came down, struck me in the head and pushed me off the trail and into a ravine.

While our group was split, Emily sprang into action. Trees were continuing to fall and everyone initially thought I had died, she took control of the situation and directed our group on what to do. Her actions ultimately set a rescue mission in motion, and the Grand County Search & Rescue team came to get me out and save my life.

I spent a week in the ICU, followed by several more days in the hospital before being transferred to Craig Hospital to begin rehabilitation.

Since then, it has been a difficult, frustrating, humbling, and scary road to recovery; it is a life long journey where everything is new and there’s no back to normal, just new normal.

Suffering from a moderately severe, traumatic brain injury due to a heavy impact has a low percentile chance of survival and reasonable recovery, but I am incredibly thankful for Emily and the support system I have that helped me get back to where I am now.

I’m just happy to be here.

It’s been a week since tour ended.
A week in 2026 has felt simultaneously like a year and a day. Wake up, drive, load in, check, play like your life depends on it, load out, sell merch like your hotel depends on it, go home, sleep, repeat.
To show up and play each night has been an unimaginable privilege - one that we’ve dreamt of since as long as we’ve had dreams.
To turn to my left and right each night and see the three other people we each get to share the stage with has been an incredible honor - one that I’ll be grateful for eternally.
Each night before walking on we collectively decide who we were playing for. Some nights it’s been for our childhood selves. Some nights it’s for Max. Some nights it’s been for a hurting world. Some it’s the simple reminder that we don’t have to be so afraid of each other or the world around us. Some nights it was just Joy into the abyss. No night is without a guiding star to both draw our energy from and direct our energy towards.
Don’t get me wrong, we had a blast virtually nonstop - but it felt like we also cultivated a collective purpose to show up for that was greater than ourselves.
32 shows in 7 weeks. A time that opened our hearts to the collective human spirit throughout this expansive beautiful fucked up country. To love the world - to really love the world, to love existence - is to love it in its entirety. You do not get to choose only the parts you deem worthy of love.
This year on the road we had the privilege of seeing so much - often being humbled by the magnitude of a landscape & a poignant reminder of the scale of our existence. Other times experiencing a forceful reckoning with what different forms of human suffering can look like, and how only slight alternate choices could land you in any range of places within those forms.
At the beginning of this long road, we tongue in cheek referred to ourselves as “soldiers of joy” - fighting the good fight to spread light into this dark world. Today it feels like we have those words tattooed inside our ribcage as a reminder to our heart to carry it forward in everything we do.
So here we are - soldiers of joy - ready for the road ahead.
All love, always.

Got to live out my childhood dream - and it was even better than I imagined.

32 shows (+4 after parties) in 52 days across the entire country.

We set a mission to finish our first tour as a better band and better individuals than when we started. Along the way we learned the perks of breathwork and meditation (thanks @gavinchops and @zachbayard), I avoided driving one single time (sorry @maxbritt), and I finally got the nerve to harmonize onstage with the best singer I know (@wzachbritt the man w the golden pipes).

Sold merch next to @sirengrayoftheocean ripping Mario Golf every night, DJed what felt like a movie in Phoenix, performed in some of our dream venues, mastered the magical art of the load-out (somehow it just makes its way to the van while I’m selling t-shirts), played the best shows of our lives, and dialed in a set we’re really proud of.

We took over @tj.mccloy’s house during a two-day snowstorm, cried laughing at billboards, loaded into venues in below 0 temps, rented a hotel conference room just to hang out, saw friends we hadn’t seen in years, drank a nauseating amount of white monster (@monsterenergy I’ll be waiting for my sponsorship), discovered the wonders of Idaho, went to the redwood forest, saw winter turn to spring, and met my best friend at a very Santa Fe time in her life.

But above all, we got to share joy with thousands of people around the country.

That was the core of our mission. My favorite photos from the tour are the ones where we’re all beaming at each other onstage, having the time of our lives, and the crowd is smiling back - at us, at each other - just feeling the warmth and radiance of music in a time when we’re told every day there’s less and less of that.

This post could go on forever - each show and each moment was eternity. Soldiers of joy, grooving to creation, raising a victory flag hoisted in sound.

Thank you @magiccityhippies for taking us on this tour.

Thank you @waldengrams for trusting us with vanny on the road.

Love my boys @supertastemusic - we did what we set out to do and had a blast doing it.
