The whole time I was in college, majoring in journalism and digital media production, I said I didn’t want to work in TV when I graduated.
When it came time to graduate, the only real conversations I’d had with potential employers were in the TV industry, so I said “okay fine, it’s just three years.”
For the first 2 months I thought there was no way I was ever going to make it for three years. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and learned by trial and error.
Before I knew it, I was scared I wouldn’t get my full three years. Thankfully I did, plus some.
Now, I’ve produced every single show, including several that existed when I started that don’t anymore. I got to help create and produce a feature/franchise series, which is still one of the proudest moments of my career so far. I got to launch a new newscast and be the executive producer of a station in my home town market without having to leave Huntsville. And I found out, to my own surprise, that I actually love producing sports coverage.
The first picture is a side-by-side of a picture from my first day and a picture from Friday, my last day. Looking at my younger self, I had no idea what was in store. There was a look of naivety, excitement and hope in my eyes that I couldn’t get back if I tried. In the “after” picture, I have a certain confidence and sense of self that I never would’ve had without this experience.
Tomorrow I’m starting the next chapter in my life, but no matter where I go from here, the mountain, WAAY, and the family and friends I gained along the way are part of me forever. 🏔️📺❤️
