$Spinning a maddening psychological thriller that questions reality, L’Autre worms its way under your skin to deliver an effective thriller led by a great Pierre-Yves Cardinal. As Stan lies in his hospital bed recovering from his cancer surgery, things start to get weird. Is there a malevolent force present, is the overworked hospital staff failing to meet their standard of care, or is Stan losing his mind? This is the concept that Alexandre Franchi and Simon Lavoie build their screenplay around, sprinkling in unsettling moments of terror and twisted moments of humour to keep the audience engaged. Even with some uneven pacing in the film’s first half, as Stan’s maddening stay in the hospital intensifies and the thematic exploration of the workload of health care workers, the effects of patient’s family unfolds, and past trauma, there is a compelling story to be told in L’Autre. The glue holding the entire production together is Pierre-Yves Cardinal’s lead performance as Stan. Capturing his character’s fear of what he believes to be experiencing with undeniable sympathy, while subtly building a manic craze that questions whether the film’s narrative point of view can be fully trusted, Cardinal excels as the heart of the film. With Cardinal’s commanding performance championing the story’s state of paranoia, that when combined with quick editing to evoke the fracturing of Stan’s reality, L’Autre becomes a twisted tale that will keep audiences invested as they discover if what Stan thinks he is experiencing is true, or if he is losing his mind? 6.5/10 L’Autre had its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, and watch for it coming soon to the rest of Canada from Maison 4:3 Starring Pierre-Yves Cardinal, Bilel Chegrani, Karine Gonthier-Hyndman, Nahéma Ricci, Marc Messier, Benoît Gouin & Maxime Genois Co-Written and Directed by Alexandre Franchi #TIFF #TIFF2026 #PierreYvesCardinal$
