You can't tell but I nearly broke down in tears just before the word 'miracle'. And I was struggling to find a better word than 'outshine', but actually that is perfect. Explosions produce fire with no true warmth and music brings the real light. The kind that outshines oppression.

Huge thanks again to the 94 violinists who made our original video - you were all with me in that basement, especially Valentyn Yembrk who died defending Ukraine.

I will be posting many photos from my trip which could not have happened without an incredible team in Ukraine, with special thanks to Gala, Marina and Anastasia of the NGO 'Creative Sensor' @vymiriuvach and the Zhytomyr City Council and @elenaharpsichord for her beautiful piano playing and translation!

I’ve been thinking. (Never a great sign.) I go to so many classical concerts these days that I’ve decided to rebrand myself as a “skilled listener”. I just sit there basking in a wash of unamplified sonic splendour, and apparently that has turned into a personality. So, I thought I’d start sharing some of my thoughts here.

I’ve been to 3 excellent concerts in the last 4 days, but last night felt like the one:

Bartók: Violin Concerto No. 2 (1938)
Bartók: Five Hungarian Folk Songs, Sz.101 (1933)
De Falla: The Three-Cornered Hat (1919)

The big draw here was astonishing violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja (Pat Kop to you and me). She gave a truly special performance of Bartók’s violin concerto (written in 1938 as an expression of Bartók’s anti-fascist convictions). It’s an austere work, one I’ve previously struggled to love. I enjoyed it here, however, more than any performance of any violin concerto I’ve seen. Gnarly, percussive sounds everywhere, from both Kop and the LSO. Primal and literally barefoot, Kop seemed more demonic than Led Zeppelin.

She, Rattle, and the LSO felt in conversation, Kop at times bending her whole body to find the strength necessary for some awkward accent she wanted to place on a shrieking glissando. She’d then lift her violin while swinging around, twisting her back to face a specific orchestra member as she and that musician locked into a moment of harmony. This was the kind of hair-raising virtuosity only a very small number of performers on the planet have access to. Everything was contrast: prehistoric ugliness giving way, without warning, to unexpected, fleeting moments of lyricism. My cup overfloweth.

The second half had a lot to live up to. De Falla is a sadly neglected composer who had a real talent for orchestration. As with his famous El Amor Brujo, Three-Cornered Hat is a true orchestral showpiece: fun and full of Spanish colour. It builds to a very exciting final dance where the LSO entered what I think of as their “extra gear” more than once; but ultimately, De Falla’s breezy festivity was overshadowed by the demented grunge of the “next level” first half.
