Introducing Colour Loft, our new project bringing Portsmouth100 to a spectacular close 🎉 Created and produced by Trigger, Colour Loft will transform Portsmouth Guildhall from 8-10 January 2027 into a world of colour, light, sound, movement and making. At its heart is a giant moving artwork, created with hundreds of pieces made by people across Portsmouth. Visitors will be invited to make flags, try sewing, explore traditional rigging techniques and discover stories from Portsmouth’s past, with every contribution becoming part of one spectacular moving artwork. Colour Loft takes its name from Portsmouth’s historic colour lofts, where skilled women cut, stitched and assembled sails, flags, pennants and signals used by ships. The project brings this often-overlooked history into the present, connecting the historic role of flags as symbols of communication and identity with the ways people use symbols and creative expression today. Building on the creativity, participation and civic pride of the Pride of Portsmouth trail, Colour Loft invites Portsmouth’s communities to come together and create its finale. 📍 Portsmouth Guildhall 🗓️ 8-10 January 2027 🎟️ Free entry Colour Loft is created and produced by Trigger. A visionary work which influenced a century of sci-fi and gave us the word “robot”. 🤖 Over 100 years later writer Ella Road (Black Mirror/Dr Who) has reimagined it as ROBOTA: high voltage theatre for the AI age. Idealistic activist Helen takes on the Rossum Corporation as they get ready to roll out their ‘living AI’ worldwide. But as the line between human and machine blurs, how do we hold onto our humanity? Directed by Roy Alexander Weise, ROBOTA is playing now at the Schwarzman Centre until the 18th July. Weehee! New play 🎭! For @HeadlongTheatre & @schwarzmancentre! ‘Robota’ (or ‘Prove You’re Not’) is a - very loose - adaptation of Karel Čapek’s 1920 play, which coined the modern word ‘Robot’. This new play is about big tech, the uncanny valley of AI, and how all things — including the stories we tell, our relationships even — are governed by algorithm. Like with most Big Topics the best way to approach them is with humour. Turns out robots can be kinda funny 🤖🤷🏼‍♀️ I’ve written it at high speed, collaborating with the inimitable Roy Alexander Weise (director) the brilliant Loren Elstein (designer), responding to current advancements in AI & research, folding them in as we go, and really interrogating how theatre is best suited to explore this subject. We’re opening in Oxford July 3rd - July 18th, as the inaugural full-scale show at the shiny new Schwarzman Centre. It’s a collaboration with Oxford University’s Dept for Humanities (including their new centre for Ethics in AI) and there’ll be a free programme of talks around the show. Keep eyes peeled for more!
