Artist Statement: A Tree I Once Knew

The tree in our yard, which was their long before we got there, created the shadows on the ceiling in the walls which my children saw as they tried to fall asleep when they were young. When we built the treehouse in it the first time, the kids in the neighborhood wanted to go up. They would have to learn how to climb a tree because there was no ladder, and the rule was if you could climb the tree and get into the treehouse, you could go in. I always believed climbing a tree was an Essential childhood skill. When Max got a little older and began diving, he would pull the trampoline over next to the tree so we could jump from higher up and practice different things. So in a way a tree took him to Olympic trials. When Reed moved to New York as an undergrad and called me one night telling me that he was gonna go out to graffiti, he came back safely in the morning after having graffiti giving tree handing down foreclosure notices on the side of Chase Bank in New York City. And later the final treehouse became a sanctuary during Covid and beyond a place to Reed in a snowstorm with a glass of whiskey. The tree gave a shade and soft sounds in the summer ones and hope and architecture in the sky during the winter, and oh she was beautiful in the fall.

Happy pride y’all !!! Some years back, There was a priest in Pittsburgh, who was telling people not to take their kids to pride events because it was the devil’s playground. We had never decorated for pride really before however My son @maxshowalter is fabulously gay and so is my godson @jdrudy along with mountains of people that we care deeply about. I thought we needed to respond appropriately. So that year we put out seven giant unicorn sprinklers in the yard set on timers to go off at 11 o’clock, 1 o’clock, and 3 o’clock and we invite all the neighborhood kids to come and play in the sprinklers when they went off during that summer. Since then we found how this simple decoration helps us connect to people when they stop by and say hello or take pictures . It’s truly a delight to meet people. We would not otherwise meet. We built this version a couple weeks ago and then a tree smashed it and took it all down. We’re back up for pride weekend. The last clip here is a kids eye view. I make all these decorations to make kids eyes light up and make them dream in the middle of the day. If it makes you smile, stop by and take a picture or swing on over and look at my art photography on my instapage, give it like or follow. Have a great safe pride weekend! Cheers!!! 🥂 .
Also please tag and share with someone you think could use this.
