atb turns 8 today <3 It’s a little corny ah to say it out loud but this year truly changed everything. The last 8 years have been full of constantly trying to figure out what atb even is and what we’re meant to be long term. It’s a strange pursuit to try and define something like this, when it’s really just a mission to maintain a certain mindset. Sometimes it can become questionable if there is even any true value in defining such a thing. As we embraced new ventures this year, it felt good to let go of the result. We chased the new shit because the new shit felt right and moved with a mindset of curiosity. We spent this year blindly taking shots in the dark and embracing the new. There’s so much freedom in realizing that you can re-invent yourself creatively over and over and over again and it really doesn’t matter. That freedom in the embrace of the unknown was felt all year long. Most of this year was spent launching @atb.venue and Community Service Fest. The most exciting aspect of these new projects has been seeing just how much they’ve meant to our community around us. Having a physical manifestation of the mission and a true home for ATB in the form of @atb.venue has become a living, breathing, reminder of why we do this every day. The energy within the building day in and day out is immediate, powerful, and impossible to ignore. It can be an earth shattering experience to stumble into a group of people that stick around longer than you thought they might. It can be even more shocking to learn how you feel when you let your guard down enough to truly let those people in. Sometimes that stranger that you met at the show in the parking lot becomes family a lot quicker than you expected. It’s a beautiful thing and much of this year has felt like that. It’s easy to forget how much we need each other. Every single time that a stranger becomes a friend in the four walls that confine them to an ATB show, what we’re doing is working. Thanks for an amazing eight year run so far. The cat has been out of the bag for a few weeks now: @atb.venue opens this weekend. We’re excited to see you at our opening shows but before then, some words and thank you’s seem in order. It feels humbling and strange to be doing something like this at a time where so many people have been pushed away from doing exactly this. Over the course of the last few years and even the last few months we’ve seen some of the rooms that made us who we are close their doors. What they did for the communities they served is thankless work, and so wildly important. Watching people we look up to do this work, is the reason why we’ve chosen to do it ourselves and in some ways it’s easier to understand what they were going through now. This shit ain’t easy and it isn’t gonna get easier, that has been made vividly clear by the last six months of literal blood, literal sweat, and literal tears we’ve put into this building. But one thing is certain and clear: it’s worth it. We owe it to the venues and communities and people that have shaped our love for this shit to pay it forward, and that is exactly what @atb.venue seeks to do. We’re honored and humbled to begin this journey and can’t wait to see where it brings us. The future is unpredictable, malleable, and entirely ours to create. We will do our best to make this place somewhere that means something to you, because we built it in the vein of the places that meant something to us. That cycle of creation is what keeps this shit alive, and we hope when it’s said and done for us that this place inspires the next one. When an artist invites you to visit their studio, always say yes! Recently I had the great pleasure of meeting designer Stijn van Ardenne @stijnvanaardenne and picking up one of his signature 3D printed lamps. The studio and fabrication facility is quite impressive and inhabits a gloriously cavernous space on the upper floors of an older building in Rotterdam. Tomás Jaramillo @tomas2228 showed me HIS Barcelona, and his intricate drawings and paintings that are grounded in the magical possibilities of nature. His home studio overflowed with greenery and his various works in progress. Can you believe the view from his balcony?? After striking up a conversation at the event I hosted for LA Design Weekend, artist and furniture maker Maximilian Rudolf Von Strasser @maxvonstrasser invited me to visit his spacious live work studio in southern Los Angeles. It was so inspiring to see the organic expressed in both painting and furniture by the same artist! #art #artist #artiststudio #studiovisit
