Six years ago, I took a leap of faith by joining an NGO on a nine-month contract. At that time, I viewed it as a temporary role before securing a full-time job at a law firm. Little did I know, this decision would profoundly shape my career, leading me to a path that truly resonates with me today: becoming a social worker.

Yesterday marked my last day as a social worker at WAO. As I reflect on my journey, I feel a mix of bittersweet nostalgia. WAO has been more than just a workplace; it has been the cradle of my personal and professional growth. It was within these walls that my journey as a social worker began, a journey that I will cherish for years to come.

My legal background, which I do not regret, has significantly contributed to my strength in case management. My ability to think critically, deeply rooted in my understanding of law and processes within structures and systems, has been invaluable. It feels like the pieces of a puzzle coming together.

On a personal level, WAO was where I fully embraced my identity. The culture here is remarkably open and inclusive. It has instilled in me many of the values I hold dear today: respecting boundaries, being mindful, showing compassion, embracing inclusivity and striving to be a better person. WAO has undoubtedly played a significant role in shaping who I am today.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with wonderful colleagues. I often think of them and feel profoundly grateful. Some have evolved into deep and meaningful friendships, while others are comrades with whom I can always engage in stimulating conversations. I am now aware of how loved and valued I am, as my colleagues have always believed in me, often more than I believed in myself.

Today, I especially want to express my gratitude to two exceptional individuals, @maxwellcats and @fayfantastico for their unwavering faith in me. Throughout my time at WAO, their leadership has been a beacon of support and inspiration.

According to @pdrmsia_official 👮🏻‍♂️👮🏻‍♀️, the country saw a spike in domestic violence cases last year (2021) compared to the previous year (2020). The total number of cases reported, & investigation papers related to domestic violence incidents was 7,468 😮. In fact, during the initial MCO, which was critical to containing the spread of COVID-19, 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧'𝐬 𝐀𝐢𝐝 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐖𝐀𝐎) experienced a 3.4-fold increase in calls & enquiries to their 24-7 crisis support hotline compared to pre-MCO levels 🤯. This is caused by the isolation of domestic violence survivors at home with their abusers, which cuts survivors off from social support networks & services.

Since 1982, @womensaidorg has provided 𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐄 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫 to women & children who have experienced abuse 🤕. As Malaysia's largest provider of services to domestic violence survivors, WAO also offers survivors of domestic violence, rape, & other forms of abuse, confidential services. Their services are based on the conviction that every woman has the right to live a liberated & independent life. WAO also educates over 3000 women each year about their rights & choices, allowing them to make informed decisions at every phase of their journey.

I am deeply honoured to be working alongside 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 (𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐖𝐀𝐎), as their Mentor & Coach in assisting survivors of domestic violence, harassment & rape. Her experience as United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for more than 10 years is invaluable. Together, we hope to help survivors of abuse of all races & religions without discrimination, & to provide opportunities for those who want to acquire skills to achieve economic independence 💪🏻.
