POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A few moments from Darat, by House of Gongs that brings Filipino history, culture and Indigenous traditions to life through music, dance, fashion and storytelling.

There is so much beauty in this production, but also a painful history beneath it. Set against the legacy of the Sakadas who came to Hawaiʻi to work on the sugar plantations, Darat explores what generations of Filipinos have carried, preserved and passed down.

A little behind the scenes: performances by the incredible dancers and musicians, fashion by Elle Karayan, and spoken word by Brian Adrias. Music for this reel by Lotus Sky.

Not pictured: my panel, What We Carry, with Sakada descendants Ashton Obrera and Chef Eric Pascual, whose perspectives on family, identity and cultural inheritance added another dimension to the experience. I’ll follow up with that later.

Sending Good Vibes to our Dance Artists-Scholars at the Dance Studies Association (DSA) 2026 Conference this week!

Big aloha and best of luck to 13 of our amazing dance graduate students, lecturers, faculty, and alumni presenting at the DSA Conference: Speculative Choreographies: Bodies, Economies, and Movement in a World in Flux! This conference explores how dance speculates - how it reflects, resists, and reimagines - the forces that shape our contemporary world. These forces include migration and memory as well as media, markets, and the social choreography of bodies across borders, platforms, and stages. In this post-truth moment, and in a region forged by spectacle, migration, media, labor, and ecological extremes, the 2026 DSA conference asks: How do bodies move through—with and against—systems of control, extraction, discipline, and erasure? What possibilities emerge when we imagine movement as an affirmative form of world-making?

Gathering at California State University, Long Beach, in Los Angeles, on the ancestral lands of the Tongva people at Puvungna, the conference offers a powerful space to share ideas, spark conversations, challenge systems, and imagine new possibilities through dance and performance. We’re excited to see our UHM Dance ʻohana bringing their research, creativity, and perspectives to this gathering of dance artists and scholars from near and far!

Behind every show you’re about to see is a crew that works tirelessly before the lights ever come up. As we gear up to bring DARAT to life, we just want to take a moment to appreciate the incredible people holding down the fort behind the scenes.

This production is in the best possible hands thanks to this team:

TJ Aranas & Dianne Deauna (Production Managers): Thank you both for being the backbone of this entire journey. From endless logistics to keeping us all grounded and ready, your leadership and heart make everything run smoothly.

🎬 Max Winig & Kupai Marx (Stage Team): Thank you for ensuring that ensuring cue, transition, and detail second nature will all be smooth comes the actual production dates.

💡🔊 Kaleikini Production & Twilight Audio (Lights & Sounds): The atmosphere you are built for this show is unreal. Thank you in advance for bringing the vision to life and ensuring every moment will look and sound pure magic.

We’re almost ready for curtain call, and we couldn't be prouder to share this moment with all of you. Let’s do this!
