WELCOME ABOARD THE BETTY-ANNE SPACE STATION! 👩🏻‍🚀👨🏻‍🚀

Houston, we have… Sound deadening and insulation. LOTS of sound deadening and insulation. 😂

Betty-Anne has officially entered her NASA spaceship era and I’m not entirely convinced we haven’t accidentally started building a spacecraft instead of a campervan. Seriously, LOOK AT HER. 🪩 Everywhere you look, SILVER. Walls? Silver. Ceiling? Silver. Doors? More silver. If aliens land and need somewhere to park, we’re practically ready to welcome them aboard. 👽 But underneath all that shiny goodness is another big step forward in the conversion!

We’ve been busy with the Dodo Mat, getting in to all those awkward little spaces, covering panels, working around the van’s ribs and making sure Betty-Anne is properly insulated before we start hiding everything behind the pretty bits. Which sounds relatively straightforward until you’re trying to persuade insulation to fit in to approximately 947 oddly shaped gaps!

We’ve even been stuffing recycled plastic insulation in to some of the cavities, because apparently there wasn’t quite enough silver stuff to keep us entertained.

And can we just appreciate how much work (and cost!) goes in to the parts of a campervan that nobody will ever see again?! 😭 Hours and hours of cutting, sticking, squeezing, smoothing and occasionally questioning our life choices… Only to eventually cover the whole lot up. But it’s all part of turning our big white metal box in to a cosy little home on wheels.

Nicholas continues to prove that there’s very little he won’t have a go at, and I’m beginning to suspect he’s watched enough YouTube tutorials to qualify for some sort of honorary engineering degree. Meanwhile, I’m already imagining the finished ceiling, warm lighting and cosy interiors.

Nicholas: “We’ve still got loads of insulating to do…”

Me: “Yes, but imagine the fairy lights...” ✨

Next stop: The moon. In reality, next stop is MKM for more wood, as we are about to finish the floor and then start building the housing for the electrics.

Part 2 of things we’ve bought for our campervan! 🚐

This time we’ve got windows, roof fans, our underslung water and LPG tanks, Starlink and the little Belfast sink I really wanted to squeeze into our kitchen.

One of the biggest things we’ve had to think about is making the most of the space we’ve got. We’re going to be living in the van full time with two toddlers and Skye, so every bit of space counts. Hence the enormous tanks living underneath the van, and Tom spending an insane amount of time figuring out where to run cables.

A little note on our water setup: our Shurflo water pump actually came with our Truma Combi boiler package, so we bought the accumulator separately to help keep the water pressure steady and reduce how often the pump kicks in.

I’ll still be working remotely while we travel, so the internet setup has been a big deal. We’ve now got Starlink installed and we’re looking at the Unlimited Roam plan (around £100 a month 😬) Pricey… but I can’t risk being in some remote field in Albania with awful signal and not being able to get any client work done!

As with Part 1, a little disclaimer: we’re not living in the van full time just yet. We’re sharing what we’ve chosen and why, rather than claiming everything is perfect after months on the road. We’ll report back once we’ve properly tested it all.

Part 3 will be coming soon, including the solar panels, Tom’s homemade roof rack and plenty more bits.

If you’re planning your own conversion, hopefully this gives you a few ideas… and if there’s anything you’d like us to talk about in more detail, just ask!

VAN BUILD PART 13: Installing the maxx air fan

Another day, another leak in the van 🤡💦

Installed our @maxxairvent fan and thought we’d absolutely smashed it… until the rain came and proved otherwise 🙃

Turns out sealing around the fan is all well and good, but sealing the actual screws is apparently quite important too. Who knew? 😭😂

A bit more sealant, a few breakdowns and another lesson learnt the hard way… we’re finally watertight (hopefully 🤞🏼)

At this point we’re not converting a van, we’re just learning 101 ways to make one leak 🫠🚐

New layout unlocked 🔓 This one seems to be a favorite!

We have done our “Ontario” layout a few times now but not specifically with these captains chairs. They add that perfect amount of customization being one of the easier seats to take in and out as needed, and still allowing room for gear storage in the back!

This is built on a 144 AWD Sprinter chassis.

BETTY-ANNE HAS EYES IN THE BACK OF HER HEAD! 👀

Another job ticked off the Betty-Anne list: reversing camera installed AND a shiny new brake light to go with it. 🔧✨

And at this point, I’m starting to think Nicholas has accidentally become a professional converter. 😂

We started this project armed with YouTube tutorials, snacks and a frankly questionable amount of confidence.

Fast forward a few months and Nicholas now approaches Betty-Anne with the confidence of a man who has seen things.

⚡ Electrics and conduit? Aye, no bother.
🔨 Stripping, sanding, filling and generally dismantling things? Done.
🦤 Dodo Mat? Pass the roller.
🏷️ Labelling everything that stays still long enough with his beloved Dymo? ELITE LEVEL.
📷 Reversing camera and new brake light? Apparently we do that now too.

We DID draw the line at cutting giant holes in the sides and roof of Betty-Anne for the windows and MaxxFan and very happily handed those jobs to an actual professional. 😂

But everything else? Nicholas has just cracked on and learned how to do it.

And I have to give him his dues… He’s getting bloody good at this. 👏🏼

The reversing camera is going to be particularly useful because Betty-Anne is, quite frankly, a substantial lady, and being able to see what’s behind her seems considerably more sensible than reversing using mirrors, prayers and vibes. 🙏🏼

Meanwhile, I continue to fulfil my own extremely important role in this conversion:
📸 Taking photographic evidence
🤔 Asking “Are you sure?” at strategically unhelpful moments
🎨 Obsessing over worktop samples for a kitchen that does not yet exist
🥪 Providing snacks

We all have our strengths. 💅🏼

Another little job done and another step closer to getting our girl on the road. 🚐🌻✨
