What can happen when the same creative practice moves between books and film?

Maine Media MFA alum Maya Cameron ’24 has already taken her work in both directions.

Her book The Mermaid Princesses, published by HarperCollins and named Best Fantasy Children’s Book by the African-American Literary Awards, is now being adapted into an animated series.

Her directorial debut, What’chu Mixed With?, has also earned Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Actress at the Flores Film Festival.

Both projects were developed during her time in the Maine Media MFA.

Different forms. One creative practice.

🎬 FINALIST SELECTION: What’chu Mixed With?

The countdown to the 2026 BWFN Short Film Festival has officially begun! 🎬✨

We’re kicking off our Finalist Spotlight Series with What’chu Mixed With?, a heartfelt coming-of-age story following Alexis, a 14-year-old biracial girl navigating identity, belonging, friendship, and self-confidence in early-2000s San Francisco.

When Alexis is struggling to embrace her natural hair and find her place at a predominantly white school, an unexpected friendship with 17-year-old “it girl” Precious introduces her to a new world — and helps Alexis begin to see herself in a whole new way.

At its heart, What’chu Mixed With? is a story about identity, confidence, community, and learning to embrace every part of who you are. ❤️

Doing these film festivals i have met so many talented, passionate, amazing black queens. Some of them will be my life friends. I learn so much from them. I support them. I hear them. I see them. Black women are the most congenial humans I’ve ever encountered. I implore you to follow these women and their journeys. I’ve seen all their work and it’s stellar ( or they wouldn’t have made this Iconography 🤣) #Bronzelens

We want filmmaking to be indefinite in Oakland every year! Mayor Barbra Lee @mayorbarbaralee said in December , “ I want Oakland to be the film hub of Northern California “, and we have a proposal for that to happen the investment just has to be there. When @janani4oakland opened up the chambers for us to have a “City Hall Edition” it gave the people the opportunity to have a say, and the people showed up. #MakeOaklandAFilmHub #BayAreaFilmNight
