🚨 ALERTA URGENTE || #BELICE

🚨 URGENT ALERT || #BELIZE
Imminent threat to the life and safety of traditional Q’eqchi’ Maya leader Marcos Canti, who was kidnapped yesterday amid land grabs targeting Indigenous Peoples.

Marcos Canti, the First Alcalde of Indian Creek Village in the Toledo District, was kidnapped yesterday, April 13, between 3:20 and 3:42 p.m. while he was at his milpa farm.

The village’s community police received an audio message from Mr. Canti’s phone, in which he can be heard being beaten and tortured while pleading for help in his native language.

❌This violence is not isolated. It comes amid escalating land grabs against the Q’eqchi’ Maya people, where ancestral lands are being taken in the name of “conservation,” deepening conflict and division in the community.

‼️ Marcos Canti must be found alive.
‼️ The violence must stop by forest rangers.
‼️ Indigenous Rights must be respected.

As IPRI has denounced in various forums, violence against traditional leaders is a strategic tactic to intimidate and immobilize entire communities so they cease defending their traditional territory. #IndigenousRights

As we reflect on the first week of #COP30, we invite you to pause with us and recognise the vital role of women in advancing land rights, protecting nature, safeguarding biodiversity, and defending future lives.

Their knowledge, courage and leadership are driving climate justice forward.

From Indigenous, Afrodescendant and local communities’ women protecting their territories across the world, to women working at the intersection of law, policy, finance, community-led conservation and community action — their efforts are creating pathways for communities to thrive and for nature to endure.

The first week has shown, once again, that the solution to the climate crisis is already alive in their hands

🔁 If this resonates, share it — amplify their leadership.

🔺How do we bridge the gap so Indigenous, Afrodescendant, and local communities can access climate finance directly?

🌿Mechanisms are taking shape, pathways are in motion—and we’re helping connect actors, strengthen relationships, and support the territorial and community-led funds that make this shift possible. Much remains to be done, but the momentum is growing.

👉 What processes should be strengthened or advanced next? Share your thoughts below.
