Artist statement🎨:
“I believe that art, in whatever form, is at least partly an expression of the self. One cannot escape
the influence of the self that makes the art, the selves that may learn and perform the art, and the
selves that may observe the art. Art is a trap that forces its captees to encounter truth, whether
invited or not. If one enjoys, one has encountered their experiences and beliefs that culminated to
such pleasure. Similarly, if one rejects, one has encountered their experiences and beliefs that
culminated to such distaste.

I have little control over what the audience sees. With this in mind, I find focusing on what I see in the art to be most important. I want to be thoughtful and interested in what I’m creating; those are my only qualifications. Following this standard has generally resulted in nonsensical, strange, and/or specific works.

All professional works I have made thus far have been an attempt to cope with something in my life.

Most details that are crucial to me are invisible and meaningless to the average viewer.

If I can make the observer laugh, I feel happy.

If I can make an old white man question “Is this dance?” I feel successful.

If I can heal parts of myself, I feel satisfied.

If I can promote healing within my fellow artists, I feel fulfilled.”

Lovely pictures of my lovely cast!
🍔✏️🗒️☕️

Press release:
“What Else Do You Have to Protect You? (Waschbären bei einem 7-Eleven) opens with a look in on the happenings of Mirra’s Diner: where coffee, pancakes, and reminders of all the baggage we carry with us, are served. Six dancers take the viewer through a variety of choreographic styles, soundscapes, and moods. Along the way, the diner’s waitress becomes enlightened to her resentments and the importance of accepting them.“

Premiered April 9th & 10th at the James and Nancy Gartner Performing Arts Center!

~Senior Studio 2026 “Ephemeral”~

What a beautiful culmination of lives creating, performing, and expressing something entirely unique to the current moment in time we share. I am so so honored to have led these humans this semester and to have been led by them + so many more both pictured and not.

Travis, thank you for cultivating an environment where we have permission to be so authentic.

Fellow seniors, you are all magical people and I am deeply honored to know literally each of you.

My cast, thank you for being vulnerable both on and off stage…and for sharing your heart with me.

Thank you all for helping put my heart back together. I am so incomprehensibly lucky.

MEET MAYAN! Our social chair for this upcoming XTE year!

READ MORE ABOUT MAYAN👇🏻
Mayan started off as a gymnast at a young age, but soon realized that dance was their true passion. They have been a dedicated dancer ever since, beginning with studio dance and later transitioning into high school dance and drill. During their senior year, they served as Colonel of their high school dance team, where they discovered how much they enjoyed leadership and developed a desire to become a dance educator. This passion ultimately led them to Sam Houston and to their work with Showmakers of America.
