I am SO incredibly proud of our garden program. 🌱💚

Watching this space come to life—and seeing teachers use it as an outdoor classroom, students talk about pollinators, and our harvest make its way into classrooms and homes—leaves me in awe.

This is the work of an incredible team: Mrs. Bernal, Maya and our partners at The Mollen Foundation and the University of Arizona.

It’s more than a garden. It’s a place where kids learn, explore, grow, and apply real-world skills.

Five years into my principalship, this is the kind of legacy I hope lasts long after I’m gone. 🌱🐝

The story of this seed is a powerful one. This seed helped revive an ancestral trade route. Connect countless communities. Feed many students and community members. After all that, we were able to share the bounty with our seed library and send some back home to our relatives in Peach Springs.

Growing and caring for the seed was also part of our youth leadership initiative and learning about the seed was incorporated into our Xinachtli Youth summer school curriculum.

There is much to share about this beautiful project. Please take a minute to watch this video and learn about the Xinachtli Seed Library. Tlazocamati!

Jade takes us through her week 3 bag + some incredible add-ons! 🥯🧄🥬

Farm Bag subscriptions allow you to be closer to your local farmers and producers. Coolest of all, they help you snag unique varieties of produce that grocery stores don’t often carry.

Chef Amber teaching at ASU for Earth Day 🌎🌱🍴

This semester I had the honor of working with Arizona State University to put together incredible programming for the school of sustainability on Earth Day. 🌳
Before getting into the classroom, we started by sourcing all produce from local farms. I then utilized the available produce to make a delicious and nutritionally balanced menu 💚
48 hours before teaching, all of the food went from the farm directly to my kitchen and we prepped cleaned and got all of the produce ready.
Finally student showed up Wednesday morning for a lecture about the importance of these local foods for sustainability and climate conscious shopping 🛒
Then the yummy part 👩‍🍳
Students work with me in the kitchen, and we dished up a beautiful menu which was then distributed to over 150 Asu, staff faculty and participants celebrating Earth Day 🌎
Tasty dish of Ramona Farms brown tepary chipotle hummus, beet hummus, and white tepary hummus with fantastic blue sky farms strawberries for the strawberry balsamic vinaigrette on the kale salad accompanied by edible flowers from Emily Heller. 🌻🌼☺️

I was honored to work with ASU, and all these sensational students and farmers. Bonus shout out to Ryan Johnson for being so enthusiastic about trying all these local foods.

Happy Earth Day 🌎👩‍🍳💚

🌱🍉Planting Yellow Sandia - O'Odham miloñ at Garfield Elementary School this week! Traditionally this variety is planted with the midsummer monsoon rains and is known for its ability to withstand the intense summer heat of Arizona. We look forward to harvesting later to share with the summer school students!

🌱 Garden Updates! 36 days later the corn we planted at Garfield Elementary School is thriving and is so happy to be surrounded by students, teachers, and even baby chicks running around.

Garfield Elementary School's Garden program is amazing and we are so happy to work and learn alongside Maya Dailey. Thank you Maya for opening the door and creating a wonderful space in the community. Stay tuned for the harvest sometime at the end of May.

✨ Planting in this special place helps us protect the integrity of the Indigenous seeds that we are caretaking by protecting them from pesticides and cross pollination. This grow-out also helps us increase their availability in our seed library and for use in cultural seed exchanges as well as ensuring the seeds for future generations. Thank you Maya and Garfield Elementary 🦋
