BINAKOL // Head Hi Lamp Show 2024
On view May 17th - May 19th, 12-6pm
102 Franklin St. in Tribeca
___
The Binakol fabric, indigenous to the Ilokanos and Itneg communities of the Philippines is a ceremonial cloth meant for protection: its geometric patterns of squares and rectangles create a dizzying effect to drive away bad spirits.

The lenticular lens transforms LED pixels into gentle, mesmerizing threads of activated light.

BINAKOL explores and attempts to soften the dissonance between indigenous and diasporic, fabric and circuitry, traditional and new media.

The Binakol fabric featured in this artwork was woven by Mang Abel Ti Abra, a cooperative established in 2010, consisting mainly of mothers who are weavers and farmers.

BINAKOL will cycle through custom animations every 30 seconds. To choose an animation, control brightness, or make any changes, connect to BINAKOL’s WiFi.
