Speaking truth to power.

In June of 1950, Senator Margaret Chase Smith did what many of her colleagues were too afraid to do; she stood up to Senator Joseph McCarthy. At the time, McCarthy and his Senate committee were using unfounded allegations and smear tactics against liberals in their relentless pursuit of "the enemies within." McCarthy wielded such power that a single accusation of communism could destroy careers and lives.

In her courageous 15 minute speech, known as the "Declaration of Conscience," Smith called McCarthy to task for character assassination, repression of free speech, and fear mongering. She warned, "It is high time that we all stopped being tools and victims of totalitarian techniques—techniques that, if continued here unchecked, will surely end what we have come to cherish as the American way of life."

In retaliation, McCarthy removed her from a key Senate committee, but his act of vengeance did nothing to damage her impressive career. Having already served nine years as a U.S. Representative from Maine, she continued to serve as senator until 1973. Smith was the first woman to serve in both houses of Congress, and in 1964 became the first woman nominated for president by a major party.

It looks like some courageous Americans wear pearls.
