My show is on for another week at @mayberryfineart! It has been a nice feeling to release the work I created over the winter, finally closing a cycle of work. I’m really happy with the show, and that I allowed myself to follow some ideas through even if they didn’t feel like part of a formal series. In this piece, I borrowed elements from my watercolour work, and to achieve the glazed gradients of the large circular shapes, I spent lots of time preparing my canvas into a buttery smooth white surface which was so pleasant to work on. I also drew from older work that explored quilting, and referenced some old mining infrastructure that I remember from my childhood up north.

Thanks to the whole team at @mayberryfineart for the warm welcome and for 20 years (🤯) of solid representation. You’re the good ones! ⚡️

With my show coming up this week with @mayberryfineart I wanted to share the spot that influences so much of my work. Refuge Cove just does it for me. Cozy, rugged, storied, always changing with the rise and fall of the tide and the decay of time, also reassuringly familiar. Coastlines, history, mysterious sheds and odd collections of structures in isolated places, it’s what I like! This spot is north of the Sunshine Coast on West Redonda Island.

‘Keep Going’ opens this Thursday, September 10 at Mayberry’s new location, 661 Wall Street Winnipeg. I’ll be at the reception from 6-8 and would love to see you there. Work is now available for presale.

Mixed Markers

Anchoring so much of the imagery I paint are mountains. I have seen mountains nearly every day of my life, they were the first thing I remember drawing, and combined with the ocean, which I came to later, create the perfect conditions for colourful magic. Mountains are forgiving, comfortable in endless shapes. Leaving a painter free to explore the edges of the colours and patterns that meet.

This particular scene is directly inspired by the shockingly beautiful mountain view that reveals itself when we go north from the Sunshine Coast towards Desolation Sound and come around Sarah Point. Pure drama! They were here before us and will be here long after.

We attended the grand opening of the gallery's new building in Winnipeg in mid July. What a fabulous new space! The place was packed and the event was so popular, the gallery had to run a second event on the following Saturday.

"Mahayana Mirrors" represents a pivotal evolution in my artistic journey, drawing inspiration from an infinity mirror ceiling adorned with lotus flower lamps in New York City. This contemporary acrylic work captures the mesmerizing interplay between different dimensional perspectives of these illuminated forms, creating a visual meditation on reflection and repetition.

This painting marks the exciting beginning of a significant artistic breakthrough in my technique. After years of exploration, I've returned to working with multiple layers of acrylic gel medium, but with a crucial innovation. Rather than applying the thick, luminous gel uniformly across the canvas—an "all-over" approach I had long sought to transcend—I now strategically concentrate these dimensional elements in specific focal areas of the composition.

The result is a textural dialogue between glimmering passages of built-up gel and ethereal areas created through thin glazes of colour.

Bring It In

This one was a bit of a departure for me. I built up a smooth surface in order to use a glazing technique to build up (what I see as) water bodies, a motif borrowed from my watercolours. I was thinking of the structures being built of quilt blocks, and pulling reference from old Yukon mining infrastructure, something I remember from treasured road trips with my mom and siblings from Whitehorse to Skagway Alaska. I don’t usually use a white background, but I like this warm white and the brightness it brings to a room. Studio shot included to show the piece on a darker wall.
