Let’s be honest, in 2015 the scene may have not been ready to fully appreciate Black Lines. But it’s been 11 years now… We’re not asking you to change your mind. We’re just asking you to listen again.

Happy Anniversary to Black Lines. Defend your favorite track in the comments. We’ll see you in court! 🖤⚖️👨🏻‍⚖️

A gold single plaque came in the mail yesterday for Mayday Parade’s cover of “Somebody That I Used To Know.” In 2011, I signed the band & they released their self-titled record thru ILG/Warner. A month prior to its release I flew to NYC to meet with Atlantic head Julie Greenwald to to gauge label support. In that meeting she made it clear that Mayday wasn’t an Atlantic priority, that they were were being demoted to ILG so she could reduce the spend & album resources & that I should be “grateful they were still putting it out.” After hearing all that, gratitude wasn’t really in my heart but I had a whole lot of other things now in my heart which I happily shared (which included a few more swear words directed to her then she was used to hearing). I realized in that moment that the only way this band was gonna succeed was if they stuck to their vision, focused on their fans & stopped listening to others, even the president of the label. Self-titled is now the second biggest release in their catalog. Once the album dropped, we had some buzz & Joyce Mealey - a publicist at Fearless called to ask if we’d be on their Punk Goes Pop compilation. Knowing we had a year to kill before we could get out of the Atlantic deal, I said yes but only if they released the compilation a month after our deal wiith Atlantic ended so I didn’t have to give Atlantic a cent. She agreed & a week later Bob Becker called me & said if the band was good with it, he could get Vic Fuentes of Pierce The Veil to feature on the track. They loved that idea & I saw a label that believed in my band & a label head who saw them as a priority. The song & the compilation came out, hit #16 on the Billboard charts & Mayday’s cover was the focus. We re-signed with Fearless & this plaque reminds me of that chapter, about how when you find the right people good things happen. Today Mayday Parade & Pierce The Veil are bigger then they’ve ever been. Anyone got Julie’s address, I might wanna send her a plaque to show my gratitude.
