I was in New York to attend the BBR Beauty Show.

What @blackbeautyroster is building is so much bigger than an event. It’s creating a space where every part of our industry, Artists, creators, brands, educators, retailers and beauty professionals can come together to learn, connect and move the industry forward, together.

The show brings industry stakeholders into one room to share knowledge, celebrate culture and spark collaboration across the beauty ecosystem. (Black Beauty Roster⁠)

From the inspiring main stage conversations and masterclasses to vendor-led education sessions and the countless nuggets shared by creators and industry leaders, I left challenged, encouraged and full of ideas.

As someone who believes deeply in the power of education and community to transform our industry, being in that room was truly a gift.

Thank you to the entire BBR team and @maudeyoaks for creating this very needed platform for us and for continuing to push boundaries in beauty.

Can’t stop thinking about crickets and “how humble its effort.” 🥹

@abortioninamerica launched just over a month ago and we’ve miraculously been able to reach millions of people with our videos about the impact of abortion bans.

For our event in New Orleans, right after the election, there was a line around the block!

@youalwayshaveoptions launched a few weeks ago and we’ve seen over 100,000 visitors to the site.

Still, sometimes it all feels so futile in the face of another trump presidency. Like we are trying to catch water in a colander. But then I keep meeting more people moving grains, building the universe, and I’m reminded that these humble efforts matter.

Mayola is the Lead of Social Impact Creator Partnerships at @Meta where she strategizes to promote social change through entertainment and media. When we did our walkthrough in December before we signed the contract, I remember saying I don’t know if we will fill it, but we will definitely try. It’s our first one.

Our community needs an elevated tradeshow experience centered on education, access to industry leading brands and meaningful networking. I had no experience with tradeshows so I called some important people for advice. They said you can do it and it’s necessary.

We heard 43 nos. Some yeses that then changed their mind. We persevered. I don’t know another place where you have prestige brands, professional brands, established and emerging Black owned brands all in one place along side incredible education, vibes, community and a hair battle. The best dressed beauty room. People have asked how I’m doing and all I can say is feet hurt and heart full.

I HAVE THE BEST TEAM IN THE WORLD,PERIOD.

We were dealt a massive blow 4 weeks before the event and they rose to the occasion even in the face of adversity. For people to compare our first beauty tradeshow show to other industry leading beauty events is incredibly humbling. Our biggest event to date. Faith of a mustard seed.

I reflect on not knowing if we were going to be able to fill it but had faith. There was a waitlist to speak and demo a waitlist to be a vendor, a waitlist for GA, a waitlist for VIP, a waitlist for everything. We truly underestimated the demand. We love everyone. Thank you for believing in the vision. We made history.

Welcome to the 2023 Future Festival @mayola

Mayola Charles leads the strategic development of social impact-driven partnerships with public figures, creators, and entertainment media publishers. Through her work, she identifies change objectives to facilitate on and off-social platform activations aimed at bringing awareness and social change through issue-based campaigns.

In her most recent role as the Social Impact Creator Partnerships Lead at Meta, Mayola led diverse community partnerships projects to help ensure that Meta is optimizing its impact on key events/partnerships to drive equity, promote inclusion, and support the development of partners who are historically underrepresented in these spaces. Mayola's experience working at the intersection of social impact and entertainment spans nearly a decade. She co-led the strategic development and execution of artist-led criminal justice campaigns including John Legend’s #FREEAMERICA and Common’s Hope and Redemption Tour.

Prior to that, Mayola developed social impact campaign concepts for film and television at Participant Media where her campaign portfolio included Academy Award-winning films and series GREEN BOOK, WHEN THEY SEE US, and A FANTASTIC WOMAN. Mayola earned a Master’s degree in International Affairs from The New School and a Bachelor’s degree in from The City College of New York.

Tonight we heard from Mayola Charles, Lead of Creator and Public Figure Partnerships at Meta. @mayola worked in nonprofit management, film release strategy, and artist and athlete consulting before landing her role at @meta. She walked us through how she works on both social impact and entertainment, always alongside talent teams. Mayola could hardly get through her deck because the Newhouse NYC students had so many great questions for her about her career and about the industry. She also did an audit of our feeds to determine why each post was showing up and broke down why “public opinion is no longer shaped by institutions—it’s shaped by feeds.”
