The other day I posted a pic on the biz account and the subject found the photo unflattering, which puzzled me. I showed it to a few people and they agreed that they understood why the person didn't love it.

This made me first consider that perhaps I couldn't tell a good picture from a bad one. But then I thought of my old friend Jill McElmurry, as I often do. When we met I was in my mid-twenties and she in her mid-forties. She wasn't yet the famous children's book author and illustrator of The Little Blue Truck. She was just an extra interesting customer of mine at the video store. Anyway, once upon a time she said to me, "The older I get, the harder it is to tell the difference between youth and beauty." And I have certainly now passed that threshold myself. Youth is so beautiful! And now I see it everywhere. And also I can't be trusted to post a photo that you find flattering.

I saw Little Blue Truck's Christmas by my late friend @jillmcelmurry the other night at a school event at Barnes and Noble. The #1 NYT bestseller was released in 2014 and is still going strong, with plush toys and everything. I'm always happy to see her books, but it makes me miss her, too. I was lucky enough to get to visit Jill and her husband/my friend Eric in Taos about a week before she passed in 2017. She signed a copy of Little Blue Truck's Christmas for Hank, and it is one my most prized possessions. ❤️

Swipe for a painting Jill did of my brother Sean and of me, back in the day.

This is our brother Sean Gilbert, painted by the late, great Jill McElmurry. He died in 2007, she in 2017. She was a good friend and an incredible illustrator and writer, most famously of Little Blue Truck. Her former husband/my friend Eric Webster sent the picture of Sean to me yesterday, which I'd never seen Thanks, man. And thanks, Jill ♥️.

Going through my dad’s stuff, found a cache of his dad’s things from when he worked on the railroad in Dunsmuir, Calif., in the 1930s. @mayoreric you’ll appreciate this. He was a union man, eventually an exec in the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, I believe @indefatigablebrett
