Part 3: Politics! Don’t sigh at me, all of life is political. And while Strong Towns Athens—like all Strong Towns branches—is non-partisan by rule, we are deeply political. We have to be! Streets, zoning, drainage, garbage removal: these are all examples of the results of politics. So you can either be part of the decision-making, or you can live with what is decided for you. Which one would you prefer?

EDIT: It was brought to our attention that councilor Jessica Thomas was mislabeled! Our apologies for this. We can’t edit the actual picture but autocorrect has been duly chastised.

THANKS Athens! That was a lot of fun! Thanks to all the bands, and our amazing crew! Thanks to the artist/vendors, and community organizations! It was a great day.

We also want to extend our gratitude to the City of Athens and our incredible sponsors and collaborators for their support making the festival happen each year. Special thanks to Mayor Steve Patterson and Deputy Service-Safety Director Andrew Chiki. We feel super lucky to live in a community that values independent music and art through free celebrations like ACAMF. Most importantly, thank you to everyone who came to check out the event! After months of planning, organizing, and navigating all the of ups and downs, it feels pretty great to see friends and neighbors filling the streets and having fun...rain or shine. We can’t thank you enough. Let’s do it again next year!

***PHOTO PILE PT. 1 - We managed to take lots of photos while running around during the event, though not as many as usual. The weather really kept us on our toes this year! Big thanks to Milo for helping us fill in the blanks with some some truly great shots! We’ll be sharing more of his stuff throughout the week! Please send/share yours and tag @acamfohio ***

It was an honor to represent Austin at the Urban 7 (U7) conference in Nancy. The #U7 brings together city leaders from around the world alongside the work of the G7 to address the challenges and opportunities facing urban communities.

I participated in a panel on socioeconomic resilience, where I shared Austin’s efforts to increase housing production and expand affordability. Another panel brought together leaders from U.S. cities, including New York City and Los Angeles, to discuss the growing role cities play in international engagement and diplomacy.

One of the most impactful conversations featured mayors and deputy mayors from Ukraine, who spoke about the realities of providing essential municipal services in the midst of war. Their experiences were both sobering and inspiring.

Austin’s growing presence in global conversations creates meaningful cultural and economic opportunities for our community. Cities around the world are eager to learn about Austin’s successes, and there is just as much for us to learn from their experiences.

Cities just took their seat at the G7 table. Now comes the interesting part.

On June 3–4, the Urban7 International Mayors’ Summit convened in Nancy — the first ever held with cities as an official G7 Engagement Group. The Summit adopted the Nancy Declaration, now in the hands of the French G7 Presidency ahead of the Leaders’ Summit in Évian.

The Declaration’s ambition matches the moment: cities as working partners in the G7 process, in both directions — delivering the Presidency’s priorities where they actually land, and channeling into the global agenda the visions and energies that residents entrust to the institution of government closest to them.

The City Diplomacy Lab was the Summit’s Scientific Coordinator. Read the Nancy Declaration at the link in bio.

Thank you, Salt Lake City, for hosting the National League of Cities 2025 City Summit!

Your city was beautiful, the mountain views were breathtaking, and what I expected to be freezing temperatures turned out to be a pleasant chill.

A huge congratulations to our very own Mayor Elise Partin for receiving the 2025 WIMG Leadership Award!

To NLC CEO and Executive Director Clarence Anthony and outgoing Board President Steve Patterson, Mayor of Athens, Ohio, thank you for your continued leadership.

Reflecting on the work sessions and networking, it’s clear that cities hundreds or even thousands of miles apart share many of the same challenges we face in our beloved City of Cayce.

It was inspiring to see public servants across the country planning events and initiatives similar to what I have or will plan. It’s a reminder that we don’t always have to rewrite the playbook, sometimes the best path forward is learning what’s working elsewhere and adapting those ideas to uplift our people and our city.

I can’t wait to bring new tools, knowledge, and inspiration back home to Cayce!

I had the upmost privilege of interviewing the president of the National @leagueofcities and mayor of @cityofathensoh, Steve Patterson, during the #NLC #CitySummit25 in #SaltLakeCity this week.

🎧 Listen to what he recommends for cities that are thinking about implementing new technologies.
