Sometimes in life you’re lucky enough to work with excellent humans who believe in great radio journalism. And sometimes all your hard work pays off in love, support, friendship and winning the 2024 Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence in the Large Market Radio category! While there was a very fancy Murrow gala in NYC (thanks Amy for representing), we got together to toast our win and engage in some very fancy drag queen bingo. We don’t see each other daily anymore so this was a very special reunion. Anyone who has worked in a newsroom knows the bond that can occur; it’s high pressure creative work on deadline with a lot at stake and in the best cases you are supported with resources and empowered with vision and freedom to do your very best. That’s what we did and even though this KNKX newsroom is no more, this win is forever. And, this bond is TIGHT. ❤️Congratulations to us! 🍾🏆 Producers, Reporters: Mayowa Aina, DD Madigan, Jared Brown, Scott Greenstone, Freddy Monares, Vivian McCall, Kari Plog, Will James, Lilly Ana Fowler, Bellamy Pailthorp. Hosts: Kirsten Kendrick, Emil Moffatt, Dave Meyer. Assistant News Director: Amy Jeffries. Online Managing Editor: Cara Kuhlman. News Director: Florangela Davila #journalism #publicradio #radio #localjournalism #localjournalismmatters @rtdna.news @npr

When I asked why I was being fired I was told I had failed as a leader. I have always had clarity on who I am, what I accomplished, the doors I opened and how I fought for change. And, for accountability. I have also been wrestling with a deep sense of self-doubt (two things can be true at the same time!) and hurt because I invested all of myself into the newsroom and into doing meaningful local journalism. I did not expect to get this news today — thank you @amy_jeffries for your text. I did not realize we had won for * overall excellence * which includes the same category as the formidable @kuow. But the knkx newsroom of 2023 just won a NATIONAL Murrow award for Overall Excellence and I am SO FUCKING PROUD!! This is our win: Amy, Kirsten, DD, Bellamy, Mayowa, Lilly, Freddy, Scott, Jared, Emil, Kari and Will and Cara. 👏🏽🍾🔥. Thank you for seeing me and for believing in me. Thank you for the beautiful memory you have given me: the experience of leading the best newsroom ever. Wow!! Excuse me while I go have an emotional day. And hey universe: I am a free agent and available to help you achieve excellence! (Friends, letting you all know because… networking!!) 😉Seriously: I’m good…and people will even tell you I have the best gif game!! 😎💪🏽 Since I paid my way to the Murrow ceremony last year (when we won a 2023 national Murrow for The Walk Home podcast in collaboration with The Seattle Times), maybe I’ll pay my way again this year because… well, awards ceremony!! In NYC!! And life is short and you always have to celebrate your wins and this is for anyone out there who is fighting the good fight and is battling all of the isms and who may be doubting themselves, especially all you Latinas!!!! 😎Gotta stop writing because I have to go share the news with my mom and tía!!! ❤️🤩 #publicmedia #publicradio #journalism #latina #latinx #seattle #tacoma #radio #morelatinosinnews @officialnahj

Here's some exciting news! Mayowa of KNKX interviewed Gloria of Southern Kitchen and Kwabi of The Peace Bus about his All Youth Can Eat program. Today, Southern Kitchen was able to provide meals to over 50 kids! The All Youth Can Eat program will run at various restaurants in Tacoma and Seattle areas through September 1st. Check @thepeacebus for a detailed schedule! #southernkitchentacoma #thepeacebus #knkx

We took All Things Considered on the road and broadcasted live from Bremerton, a ferry ride away from Seattle. The show featured a number of stories from the area, including about a Navy ship, a preserve and a graffiti wall. After the broadcast we had live performances from Eugenie Jones and Mark Lewis.

My last day as newsroom director was 12-11-23. I’m incredibly proud to have led this newsroom for four years. Incredibly proud of the vision I had to be more inclusive in our content, to prioritize accountability reporting and to have recruited and put together one of the most talented, diverse, intelligent, driven, determined and thoughtful local newsrooms you could have found anywhere. And for a hot minute, this newsroom was yours #Tacoma and #Seattle. And We Did Great Work. I don’t need an award to tell me @kkendsea is fierce and wickedly good as a Morning Edition host waking up humans everywhere and every single weekday with her smart and kind newscasts. Or that @ddmadigan is fearless and dogged and that if it weren’t for her reporting, an abusive culture in youth soccer would have gone unnoticed. But yes, it feels good to be recognized by one of the most prestigious entities in journalism telling us our work stood apart. And I’m proud to have supported my team so they could do their best work. Here’s to Kirsten (her winning newscast featured @_bellakitteh_ ), DD (edited by Amy Jeffries) and to the entire newsroom of 2023 (Mayowa, Emil, Freddy, Lilly, Bellamy, DD, Amy, Jared, Will, Kari, Vivian and Scott). 👏🏽💪🏽💐❤️😍🔥🙏🏽 Thank you to the people who trusted us with your stories and to the larger community who valued and supported the work that we did. Adelante. Oh yeah, I also went to a @mariners game on Monday and they also won! 🔥@rtdna.news @officialnahj #murrow #Murrow #publicradio #morelatinosinnews #journalism #journalismmatters #latina #latine #latinexcellence #leadership #newsroom #dailynews #womenleaders #womenleadership #awards #murrowawards #diversityandinclusion #mujeres

On Monday, while the Tacoma police trial in the killing of Manny Ellis continued and @knkx885 reporters Mayowa Aina and Jared Brown judiciously continued to cover it, I was in New York representing The Walk Home team and picking up a national Murrow award. I’m proud to be a journalist; proud to have led an extraordinary team of journalists — Mayowa, Kari Plog and Will James; thankful to have collaborated with The Seattle Times and their investigative duo Patrick Malone and Jonathan Martin; grateful to the many who supported our team including loved ones and the best, hardest working newsroom anywhere. I wore my mom’s orange blouse (vintage!), my Colombian earrings and my Peruvian ring. Remember where you come from. Always give credit. Celebrate your wins. Thank you to all those who trusted us with the story of the life and death of Manny Ellis. The story isn’t over; We Will Keep Reporting. Support local journalism because you deserve to know what is happening in your community.
