Melissa Xie explores how historical trauma leaves indelible traces on the present, centering her work on the resilient women of China’s Republican era. Drawing from the film Les Fruits de la Passion, the collection captures the tension between glamour and erosion in 1920s Shanghai through a reimagined 1930s qipao and a laser-cut plexiglass cloak. The garment acts as a tangible artifact of colonization, featuring paper-transferred archival newspapers and "calligraphic scars" of words like "dream" and "home" that appear to fall apart across the fabric. By blending Bauhaus influences with traditional Hui-style architectural tones, Xie peels back a "luscious façade" to honor those who maintained their dignity amidst a landscape of delicate decay.
