@mbandf - Legacy Machine Perpetual EVO Titanium Blue

The Perpetual EVO contains a legendary movement designed by Stephen McDonnell. If you want a glimpse into his sheer genius, I highly recommend watching his 2023 @dubaiwatchweek panel on YouTube. (Fun fact - he is an Oxford-trained theologian).

The visual architecture of the movement is in harmony with its horological function. Unlike traditional perpetual calendar systems, which typically use a complex lever system (usually 5 arms and a program wheel) that take up half the diameter of the movement, this LM Perpetual leverages a stacked gear system (dubbed the “mechanical processor”) that allows space for the elevated dials to be anchored above the micromechanical city.

Various other innovations include a default month length of 28 days (improving reliability), and a safety system that blocks correctors when the calendar is switching over, preventing damage to the mechanism. And let’s not forget the split escapement design that carries across a number of LM’s. I also recommend @jackjforster’s 2015 articles on the original LM Perpetual to get an insight into how this fascinating movement works.

With the EVO treatment the LM Perpetual receives a screw down crown for enhanced WR, a rubber strap for those humid climates or pool days, and a “FlexRing” shock absorber system should you feel like spelunking (and need to whip out your perpetual calendar in a dark cave) or whatever activity elevates your heart rate.

I always gush about MB&F and how much I love the brand. Their flavour of creative expression is, in my view, unique to the watch world and has this uncanny ability to bring out your inner child. Not to mention @maxbusser is an incredibly talented creator and storyteller who is well deserving of the brand’s success.

The Perpetual EVO and the Sequential Flyback EVO both continue to live rent free in my head. Grail status confirmed.

Congratulations to Max Busser and Friends on the new version of the SP1, so I’m posting pics of mine.

In light of the recent MAD 3 I can’t help but wonder if this watch isn’t Max’s tip-of-the-hat to Vincent Calabrese’s Golden Bridge.

The SP1 is neither a Horological Machine, the genre of watches that made MB&F so famous, nor is it one of the Legacy Machines. That series features more traditional case shapes, but with highly sophisticated reinterpretations of well-known complications.

This Special Projects watch is a simple time-only Two-Hander, though it is so transparent that it would be wrong to call it skeletonized. Based on a very simple sketch that Max Büsser made in 2018, something small and elegant was developed that can only be described as the company’s first real dress watch. Eric Giroud then turned that idea into this marvelous little timepiece.

At 38 mm it is tiny compared to what we usually see from MB&F. The Y-shaped movement architecture divides the key component groups into distinct sectors that are roughly equal size, creating a certain level of symmetry. The watch displays just the hours and minutes on a small sub-dial, while the open barrel design provides a general idea of the state of wind. Fair enough, head on it seems simple, but when viewed from an angle the suspended movement offers a real depth and complexity, resulting in one of the most striking time-only calibers. The pebble-like case with its domed sapphire feels like it has somehow entrapped a small magic generator.

The sunrise shots illustrate the way the light pours in from the side and illuminates the interior is what makes this watch so different from other skeletonized or open-worked watches. The blue inner bezel brings out the warmth of the platinum.

The strap is a dark blue alligator Nubuck from Jean Rousseau in Paris with a single hole, thus ensuring none of my kids can borrow it, at least not till they grow Shrek-sized wrists like mine.

I’m grateful to Laurent at ChronoPassion for getting me this watch so quickly. That team loves cool watches!

@mbandf - Legacy Machine Sequential Flyback EVO Aquamarine

In 2022, MBF launched its very first chronograph, one that is unlike any that came before it and would end up winning Aiguille d’Or at the 2022 GPHG for its groundbreaking mechanism.

That watch would be the Legacy Machine Sequential EVO. Like the LM Perpetual before it, the Sequential contains a movement designed by Stephen McDonnell. Here, Stephen started off with the question - what would you time with your chronographs?

Having listed out all of these scenarios, he then went on to figure out the “how”. This direction predicated the inclusion of two independent column-wheel chronographs in the watch that would be supplemented by a “Twinverter” switch. All of this is driven by a single drive train and two mainspring barrels powering the movement.

Essentially, the switch inverts the state of both chronographs simultaneously - if both are stopped, then pressing the Twinverter will start both and vice versa. However, if only one side is running, then the switch will invert their state, stopping the running chronograph and starting the stationary one. It sounds more complicated than it is, and seeing one of the many videos of this in action will clear things up quickly. The simplicity in the concept is in contrast to the mechanical complexity behind the design.

Not to be forgotten, the finishing is phenomenal on this timepiece, with a plethora of hand-finishing techniques on display on both sides of the movement.

With the EVO treatment, the LM Perpetual receives a screw down crown for enhanced WR, a rubber strap for those humid climates or pool days, and a “FlexRing” shock absorber system for any adrenaline-seeking activities.

@maxbusser is an incredibly talented creator and storyteller who is well deserving of the success he and his team are experiencing. I always admire the huge emphasis on collectors (or ’Tribe’ members) of the brand and it makes the brand so easy to grow fond of. The Sequential Flyback EVO along with the Perpetual EVO are two of my all-time favorite watches. One day I hope to have both in my collection.
