I'm still buzzing from a magical day at @akadafestival on Saturday where I not only had the honour of being a guest and reader but felt the very specific joy of being part of a community committed to making bibliophiles of the next generation. Because let's face it, nothing is as transformative as words be they read, spoken or sung.

First up was an author chat with Nathaniel AKA @mc_narth who quizzed me on my creative process and the art of keeping momentum going during quiet times (I'm definitely still a work in progress on the latter!), then it was off to the Iwemi Tent where I read to a lovely group of super sharp, imaginative and fun children (fear not older readers, the future is officially sorted). There was a prize for the most attentive young listener and I too got a cheeky and entirely unexpected goodie bag (anyone who knows me well will know I ADORE gifts) and a certificate from the founder and convener of Akada @bunmiaboderintalabi .

The author signing tent was where I got the double blessing of meeting readers and fellow authors. Such a joy to hang out with Selia, Solape and Auntie Noma and to go wild in the aisles buying your superlative books. For those thinking there is a paucity of interesting and engaging books out there, and that it is nigh on impossible to prize your little darlings from their screens, these authors' works are a powerful riposte. The last slide is just a selection of what my in-house reader (who of course was in attendance) chose. From stories with an autistic protagonist to a picture chapter book that is the perfect precursor to text alone offerings to a beautiful intro to historical biography, bedtime reading was rebooted with newness! A special shout out to #theciauzozie who authored a number of books in Igbo we purchased at the @nabu_global store. Parents struggling with your kids speaking in the vernacular gather here! Loads of African languages (including Luganda!) are available, no, I'm not a shareholder, just excited.

Thank you Bunmi and festival director @chi.lewechi for inviting me to participate - a deep bow in gratitude to you both for this truly extraordinary event. #mazzimusings
