Tiżfnu Għad-Daqqa Tal-Iżviluppaturi!

Oil on wood panel
90 x 122.5cm

Tiżfnu Għad-Daqqa Tal-Iżviluppaturi! was conceived as a direct response to overdevelopment and the erosion of Malta's cultural and natural heritage. It channels exhaustion, anger, and love for the artist's homeland into a work that functions both as artistic expression and civic outcry.

Inspired by Eugène Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People (fig 7), the composition reimagines Malta as a nation where citizens rise to defend the future, quality of life, and collective well-being. The infernal landscape, populated by pigs, is presented both literally and metaphorically, symbolising greed, the destruction of agricultural land, the loss of ODZ areas, and the erasure of history for financial gain.

The work is contextualised within ongoing threats posed by proposed legislative reforms, including Bill 143 and Bill 144, which grant extended powers to the Planning Authority, dismantle existing safeguards, and weaken citizens ability to challenge unsustainable development. In this sense, the piece not only reflects an artistic vision but also amplifies a civic demand: to protect Malta's heritage and resist destructive forces.
