POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Look, I know I’m far from the only one who likes to crawl into perpetual wormholes of nostalgia to get away from the hellscape of a world we’re living in. So with that in mind, let me ask you a question: do you remember what it was like to buy an album from a record store when you were a kid? To hold that piece of music, be it a record, a tape, or a CD, in your hands, and know there was a journey awaiting you the moment you pressed play?

That feeling, and perhaps the absence of it in the face of the digital age, inspired me to create a new interview series called “Searching to Rewind,” which focuses on the stories behind record stores and their owners, and why, as a culture, we still desperately need them.

In the first installment, I sat down with Robbie Busch, owner of Buzzed Monkey Records in my neighborhood of Fort Greene, Brooklyn. We talked about his journey from studying to be a cartoonist to his reputation as a record collector landing him his first (of many) DJ gigs.

Head to the link in my bio to read the full story, and if you’re in Fort Greene or on the hunt for well-curated vinyl, be sure to give @buzzed_monkey_records a follow and drop by the shop!

Elbow to elbow, under the clear skies along the East River in Williamsburg, we had a beautiful day of digging, hanging, and even some dancing at Brookln Flea Record Fair. Big thanks to all our vendors, DJs, attendees, @drawnk_bk spin art, and @smorgasburg team for joining together and making possible! We hope you found some treasures- either physical or in memory form. Love to see your #bfrfhaul if so inclined to share. Keep in touch for news on our next convergence.

SHOW ME YOUR SPLEEN Pt.2 (Rewind)... During my final year of art school in 1995/96 a very particular album by an unknown, uncategorizable and unfeasibly enigmatic trio not only soundtracked our scholastic studios but quite possibly redefined the way my friends listened to music for ever. Taking everything we’d learnt about jazz, psych, easy listening, spooky soundtracks & concept albums, then reducing it to one almost perfect 1969 LP, SPLEEN by the Sound Of Feeling was akin to an entire record collection in one LP, and still defied ALL pigeon holes & united flocks (Soul Boys V Sonic Youth). As young DJs coming to terms with rare-groove 1-trackers or unobtainable grails Spleen was both worthy of the hunt packing multiple bangs per buck. Sharing labels with Ruth White & the elusive 50 Foot Hose this sub-radar anomaly resembled the start of a new quest and direction. A permanent fixture in all of our skinny record satchels alongside funky rock-hybrid albums by Rotary Connection, Eugene McDaniels, Doris (Sweden) or anything with the words Cadet Concept or David Axelrod on the cover (not to mention OSTs) Spleen became a benchmark by which other LPs (meaning the ones you could listen to throughout) were judged, sending sonic smoke signals to potential new friends who yearned for a similar sound. We made lifelong friends in bizarre places like “London” or “Sheffield” thanks to this album, while finding ways to crowbar tracks into DJ sets, Radio Shows, mixtapes & samplers for many years afterwards (before the birth of the internet pointed to various formats, international versions & a mind-boggling precursor LP) To state that many of my wider friend group, including the estranged & the deceased, still worship at the altar of SOF is no overstatement, this album is BLOOD and GLUE, more intoxicating than LIQUOR and still brings me out in a cold SWEAT. The SOF story is wider, perhaps even unfinished, but for now… it would be nice to meet more HOLDERS and FEEEL how far the mutant diaspora has traveled. Show me to the lime-light, share your ring-wear, or indeed do nothing, the ambitious hashtag #ShowMeYourSpleen is unadopted. (All snaps collectors own)

@thevinylcon New York is this weekend and one of the most fun things that I really enjoy about the weekend (besides all of the great records that will in the crates) but the DJ lineup that I have the pleasure of curating. I enjoy bringing some of my favorite DJs who have amazing crates together to provide quite the soundtrack for the weekend. Personal selections from their deep crates to your ears.

See you this weekend NY!
