One of the country’s few pediatric-focused behavioral hospitals is taking shape in South Los Angeles.

Now under construction in the Watts neighborhood, Kedren Children’s Village will create a home for accessible mental health care for children and families when it is completed in summer 2027.

The 103,000-sq.-ft. campus will bring inpatient psychiatric care, outpatient services and transitional housing together in one location. An outdoor garden will provide therapeutic and recreational areas for patients, families and staff, while 24 transitional housing units will accommodate families of children receiving care on site.

“Our goal is to create a facility that not only meets the clinical needs of patients but also fosters a sense of dignity, comfort, and community connection,” said Adaeze Cadet, design principal in HOK’s Los Angeles studio. “By incorporating best practices in behavioral health and pediatric design, we are setting a new standard for care environments.”

HOK is leading design with construction by @mccarthybuild , McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., for @kedrenhealth, Kedren Community Health Center, Inc.. The project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.

Can you believe Boo Bash is next Friday, October 16th?!Just some friendly reminders; this is not a drop off event and adults must be present the entire time. This is also a private event for JBE families only. Thank you for respecting that 👻

We spend months planning; from finding lights, vendors, volunteers and all the logistics in between, but, seeing it all come together and watching families enjoy their time together to kick off the spooky season is the best! We COULDN’T do it without our sponsors, the generous donation of lights to keep the event lit and safe, donations of candy from businesses/families to keep things sweet and the donation of time by volunteers and staff who host games or support to keep it wholesome. Without those donations, none of it would be possible, so thank you!

Because of our business sponsors, there is no entry fee and ALL activities are free once in the gates. No needing to buy tickets for face paint, balloon animals, inflatables or any of that! We instead are asking for a non perishable (and non expired) breakfast item for entry that can be donated to the QCUSD Family Resource Center. One item per family is just fine but if you want to donate more, it is always welcomed!

You can bring your own food or food will be sold by vendors! Pizza, ice cream, cotton candy, lemonade and snacks; the perfect mix! if you’d like to purchase at the event, these vendors have agreed to donate a % of those sales back to JBE, also making our event cost less. Thank you!

Bring chairs or blankets and find a spot on the field (or tables provided) and have a bite to eat before the kids enjoy inflatables, the candy line, games, face paint and balloon animals.

We will have half the field blocked off so you can have an eye on your kids hopefully from any area of the event. Please remind your kids they can’t go past the Halloween caution tape! Recess games like football & soccer are not allowed as families are trying to find a spot to eat or enjoy time and that doesn’t leave a ton of room for throwing and kicking. There will be plenty other things they can do with their time.

See you October 16th for a spooky good time!

🎓 The Citywide Mentor Protégé program connects certified small businesses with larger firms and city agencies to build the skills to scale their business. Last month, we celebrated the graduation of the 2025-2026 cohort and their successful completion of the program.

👷‍♂️ One of our cohort protégés, @novusconstruct, partnered with mentor @mccarthybuild with a goal of strengthening its proposals and overall competitiveness. Their improved submissions paid off quickly: after participating in the program, Novus Construction successfully competed for and was awarded a $1 million contract with the City and County of Denver through a competitive bidding process.

Since the program’s inception, 384 subcontracts have been awarded through Mentor–Protégé partnerships, generating $172.5 million in subcontract value. These partnerships represent mentor and protégé firms from across the program’s cohorts who have gone on to work together to pursue and secure work on City contracts.
