Big thanks to @mccarthyredhead for shouting out RIVERBEND and Reelblack Renaissance. He went in expecting a straight-up Steve James action movie and came away surprised by something much richer — a film with plenty of action, but also something to say.

We especially appreciate the love for the restoration, the Steve James documentary, and the work we’re putting into Reelblack Renaissance as a small independent label. “That action movie made me think” might be one of our favorite reactions yet.

A lot of folks that weren’t there in real time don’t know that The Whispers’ version of “Up On Soul Train” was the second iteration of this wonderfully lush boogie theme. The prototype was done by the powerhouse vocalist Waters family who have been on everything from Herbie Hancock, Neil Diamond and Patti Labelle to Phyllis Hyman, Michael Jackson and Letta Mbulu.

this footage was found by @mccarthyredhead’s Video Garage!

• episode 0332, 1980.

MONDAY NIGHT! LAST SHOW UNTIL 🎃
STAND UP AND CLOWN!
8/31 930PM @elysiantheater

The show that introduced LA clown to the world. Come see comics try their hand at the most dangerous form of comedy — where the only way to survive is to surrender your intellect and trust your dumbest impulses. This month’s cast is one for the ages — don’t miss the 🤡 carnage

Hey! This photo of me holding a paper like Truman in 1948 (or Oswald in ‘63?) leads off this week’s stuff. And another shoutout to @microdosecomedy at @thefable.la and @hooplacomedy at @lyrichyperion. And @naterodamus for caring about the scene.

2. They added my photo by @damu_malik_photo to the online version. Hot.

3. This week’s show. Even hotter. Plus it has @rayjlau who also got listed in the paper.

4-5. We liked Kusama a lot.

6. @jimmyjatho is bright.

7. @aejukic at @chatterboxcomedynight. Somebody is doing a TV taping this week…

8. Chatterbathroom.

9-16. Thanks @curtiscookcomedy @simongibsonisfunny @nickskardarasy @tahirmoore @aishaalfa @professor_abee @whereschike @addykrider

17. Social proof. I want you to come to a show. Shoutout @thecomedybureau

Well the LA Times said “it’s hard to imagine a more supportive environment to see comedy” than @microdosecomedy at @thefable.la. And they called @dledsinger2funny “infectious energetic.” And it said the show will “leave you buzzing on the ride home.”

And I just fact checked all that and it’s 🎯

Last night was fun! Hot crowd. No uggos. Comedians all crushed. @originaldavidjackson did a sexy dance for us. We are spoiled rotten.

Happy birthday Jesse!
Bon voyage @h0luna get back from 🇩🇰 soon!
