Thank you @serioustopics and @deboergallery for including me in this smart, tough, beautiful show punching way above its weight. And for sharing one of the most extraordinary cities in the world with us!

de boer and Serious Topics are delighted to present SERIOUS TOPICS: group exhibition at de boer gallery, Antwerp, July 3 – August 22, 2026. Opening July 3, 19:00-21:00, the show presents thirty American artists, self-titled after Serious Topics, a Los Angeles-based artist project space built around painters whose work earns the title.

Each artist provokes thought about subjects that matter. Some investigate societal issues via figuration; others explore more personal themes; and still others favor a more abstract approach, focusing on geometry and color. While methodologies differ, all share a deep commitment to painting and affiliation with the gallery.

Serious Topics operates as a quirky modern-day atelier. Curators Kristin Calabrese and Joshua Aster provide custom handmade surfaces to artists who show at their gallery, adjacent to their own studios. Staging 5-7 exhibitions a year, they foster authentic connections among visitors and artists, hosting artist talks and drawing parties.

The exhibition will include a dedicated salon wall that serves as a nod to Antwerp’s rich history and betokens the gallery’s affinity with the collaborative spirit of Antwerp’s early guilds and painting markets.

Channeling the singular verve of Serious Topics vis-à-vis Antwerp’s legacy as a center of painting, this show’s meticulously curated maximalism recalls arrangements seen in Belgian paintings such as Cornelis de Baellieur’s “Gallery of a Collector” (c. 1635) or “Allegory of Painting” by Jan Brueghel the Younger (c. 1625-30). Just as those pictures offered insight into European painting at the time, Serious Topics offers a glimpse into a slice of art in America now.

Artists Include: Aaron Maier-Carretero, Amy McCormac, Annabel Osberg, Anne Harris, Annie Lapin, Charles Karubian, David Humphrey, Elizabeth Tremante, Heather Brown, Jaqueline Cedar, Jesse Wiedel, Joshua Aster, Julian Rogers, Justine Di Fiore, Kristin Calabrese, Lisa Edelstein, Lucas Reiner, Margarete Hahner, Michael Arata, Michiko Itatani, Michelle Fierro, Mike Reesé, Nancy Evans, Rebecca Campbell, Robert Russell, Salomón Huerta, Shiri Mordechay, Stephen Westfall, Susanna Coffey, Vanessa Conte.

Was able to catch @matgleason ‘s amazing and voluminous show Very Well Read, and see the over 470 artists’ paintings based on their favorite book.

Fun to see so many of works by good friends and artists unknown to me. A kismet was to be coincidentally hung next to one of my nearest and dearest!

This show may be about books, but to me the underlying theme are the strong friendships that exist in the art community.

Here’s just a few of my favorite works from the show. Many thanks to @matgleason for all your work! 💗

I'm so grateful to everyone who came to my opening @asis.losangeles on Saturday, and to those who couldn't be there yet supported me with messages, advice, and assistance. It was lovely to see friends new and old, as well as other artists I hadn't met before. I didn't get many pictures during the reception, but here are a few. "Unexplained Phenomenon" is up through April 4. Link in bio.

1+1=2 Amy McCormac+Julie Yeo in The Dinner Party

Amy McCormac is an expressionistic figurative oil painter based in Los Angeles. Depicting herself and her family, her artwork explores themes around the study of psychology and traumas. Her colorful compositions examine complexities in marriage, womanhood and parenting with compassion and humor. She received her BFA from Mundelein College at Loyola University, IL. In 2024 she had a solo show at Serious Topics and a two - person show with Cindy Craig at Middle Room Gallery. Press includes Art Forum Magazine.

Julie Yeo earned her MFA from New York University, BFA from Art Center of College of Design, and was a resident at the Vermont Studio Center, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and is on the White Columns Artist Registry. She participated in Felix Art Fair (One Trick Pony,) Tryst Art Fair (KAA Collective,) and LA Art Show (ACCD.) Yeo’s work has been featured in publications such as Art Maze Mag, Friend of Artist, and Shout Out LA. Select exhibitions include those at One Trick Pony, Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, Idolwild, LeRoy Neiman Gallery, and Lipscomb University.

Julie Yeo explores absence and return through ceramic self-portraits. Coming out of a decade-long PTSD induced dissociative amnesia, Yeo finds herself buffering, waiting for Ghoul (Yeo’s spirit/light). Yeo uses fire and earth to bridge the distance between Ghoul from tender, fractured forms that beckon. Neither fixed nor resolved, these sculptures are sites of yearning, grief, and becoming. The ceramic body is a signal fire, transmitting the presence of a reassembling self.
