Story time 🥲

From squatting 100kg+ in training… to ending with 80kg on the platform.

Warm-ups felt great up to 80kg, but when I hit 95kg, I felt a sharp twinge in my back on the way up. I knew immediately something was wrong — and I was right.

I tried loosening the pain with dead bugs, then attempted 105kg, but I could barely unrack it. Spirits dropped. Joben told me to reduce my opener, and even then, I wasn’t sure I could manage it.

We tested 77.5kg. I unracked it, stepped back… and instantly knew if I went down, I wouldn’t come back up. I racked it right away (first video) and broke down. Tears just kept coming because I knew what that meant for my meet.

After composing myself, I was encouraged to at least take 60kg to put a number on the board. I walked out holding back tears — not giving up, but not risking further injury. I made the rep. Painful, but I made it.

Thankfully, as the meet went on, the pain eased. With ibuprofen, heat rub, and salonpas (thank you roomie 😂), I managed to PR my bench and finish my deadlifts with little to no pain.

Kudos to my coach, Joben, for planning my training, giving me all the cues and advice, and making sure I walked out of the meet safe and successful. And thank you to Glenny, who handled me the entire meet — carrying my stuff and making sure I was ready for every lift 😄

Super grateful for Jordan, who was there for every single training session, carrying my things after my injuries, waking up early with me, encouraging me through the pain, and even helping me apply all the creams on my back 🫶🏻

And of course, thank you to everyone who came to support — and roomie for the flowers 🥰

Meet Recap:
A year of work has finally culminated in an end. Competing has always been my goal but that was marred by a major injury in 2023. Nonetheless, I'm glad that I showed up for myself and for my supporters.

(In no particular order)

1. "The original gymbros" my longest friendship out of a gym (EnergyOne) from nodding at each other because we had to share the single platform and rack most of the time to hanging out and being there for each other, I'm thankful and glad for the support that you have shown me throughout my journey.

2. "Harbourfront Pookies" moving gyms I wasn't sure if I would fit in but turns out that people who lift alike are very alike after all. Thank you for your constant encouragement and being an inspiration for me to compete and do as well as you guys did for your respective meets. To many more meets and lifts with you guys even though we don't really go to harbourfront anymore.

3. "Is that your brother" no actually we are cousins even though we look the same and are built the same we compete in very different disciplines. Thanks for the constant banter and reminding me to have fun and to enjoy myself.

4. "Family by choice and family by blood" to the friends and family of my girlfriend, and my sister. Thank you for your immense support in all of my sporting endeavours, it means a lot to know that you guys will always have my back. Hyrox was not a great showing from me but I hope that this meet was!

5. "What the hell this guy damn strong actually" is what I thought to myself when I first met you, turns out you were a national record holder but also retired. The saying goes iron sharpens iron and I'm thankful that you set the standard for me from the start. You have helped me so much with my lifting journey and without you in my corner this meet would've gone sideways real fast.

6. "In no particular order except this one, she's first" a big thank you to my girlfriend who has seen me at the peak of my strength (thus far) and also when my physicality and mentality were in the trenches post-injury, but your care and love helped dig me out of that. Thank you for your unconditional support and encouragement in whatever that I do.
