In Workshop 2 of our Summer 2026 Freedom School series in partnership with @mcjcenter, high school students redesigned spaces into edible landscapes through site planning, sketching, modeling, and collaboration. They modelled environments that produce fresh food, support biodiversity, and create welcoming places with the use of various materials such as clay, tracing paper, magazines, cardboards, and scrap exchange materials. Next up: Workshop 3, where students will bring their ideas to the next scale by designing a Community Food Hub that supports food access, learning, and community resilience. 🌱

On July 28th, we partnered with the @mcjcenter Freedom School to challenge high school students to think beyond the plate and explore how the built environment shapes access to food. Through mapping activities, discussions, and local case studies, students examined how transportation, neighborhood design, and community resources influence food access, and they began to imagine solutions through architecture and community design. Students broke into groups for hands-on exercises, sharing their ideas and learning from local farmers’ stories. #prismdesignlab #artseducation #architectureeducation #designthinking #creativeeducation

SPECIAL SCREENING ~ The Marian Cheek Jackson Center @mcjcenter Presents - SWIMMING AT THE CENTER + BLACK BUILDERS MONDAY, 7/27 @ 1PM & 7PM (BLACK BUILDERS - 31min) followed by (SWIMMING AT THE CENTER - 69min) SWIMMING AT THE CENTER tells the story of the A.D. Clark Pool and Hargraves Community Center through the voices of the people who grew up there. Focused on the historically Black Chapel Hill neighborhoods Northside, Pine Knolls, and Tin Top, the film traces over 80 years of community life — from children swimming in contaminated creeks under segregation to a hard-won pool, from a center the community built stone-by-stone for itself to the annual pool parties that reclaim it every summer. The documentary blends oral histories with historical and modern photos and was produced by the public history staff of the Marian Cheek Jackson Center for Saving and Making History. + BLACK BUILDERS: HONORING A LEGACY tells the stories of the African American stone and brick masons, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, cement finishers, and other craftsmen who literally built much of Chapel Hill one stone, brick, and nail at a time. Based on oral histories with builders and their families, this short documentary brings together audio clips and photographs to tell a story that goes back to Chapel Hill’s 18th century beginnings and celebrates the artistry, entrepreneurship, and community care of the builders. The Marian Cheek Jackson Center is in the process of planning a physical monument to honor Black builders and the film shows concept sketches of the planned memorial and invites viewers to get involved. Run time: 31 minutes

On Day 3, we had another session with the @mcjcenter Intergenerational Project that collects and preserves the history of the historically black communities of Chapel Hill and Carrboro. We were able to listen and reflect on the stories of our neighbors from TipTop, Pine Knolls and Northside. In the afternoon, Ken Mask introduced us to Building Minds, a Pontus Carlsson program to build critical thinking skills. We had a chess lesson and received a chess board to continue our learning experience. - #e3camp #education #stem #summercamp #northcarolina

On Day 2, we learned about local civil rights history. @norrell_1 , the Learning Across Generations Coordinator from the @mcjcenter brought a highly informative historical slide show of early Civil Rights protests in Chapel Hill and Carrboro for the morning E3 Camp presentation. He also shared a few that happened more recently where the KKK and people carrying confederate flags were marching in front of UNC. He asked many questions that allowed for the campers to ponder and think about the images they were seeing; “What do you think has happened to this man?” “Why do we only see young people out protesting?” He shared that Carrboro was a “sundown town” and explained what that meant. Ms. McLendon shared that her mother Mae McLendon was actually at @uncchapelhill and was one of the founders of the Black Student Movement group at UNC in the late 60s. We learned from Joshua that “without history there is no future!” - #e3camp #education #stem #summercamp #northcarolina
