The gorgeous white sand beaches that define the Dominican Republic are, in large part, fish poop. Parrotfish poop, to be precise.

These extraordinary fish spend their days grinding up coral rock with teeth stronger than copper and gold, processing it through their bodies, and depositing up to 200 pounds of pristine white sand per fish per year onto our beaches. They are, without question, the most underappreciated workers in the Dominican tourism economy and they don’t even get a paycheck.

Parrotfish also change genders multiple times throughout their lives, sleep inside a self-made mucus cocoon every night, and are led by a dominant male who earned his position by previously being female. Parrotfish are, in short, the most interesting, most eccentric, and most essential neighbors we have and most people have never given them a second thought.

That’s what makes the new collection by Sócrates McKinney and CCN so remarkable. This collection doesn’t just put a beautiful fish on a beautiful garment — it makes a statement. It says that the Dominican Republic’s biodiversity is worth celebrating, worth protecting, and worth wearing with pride. Every time someone puts on one of these pieces, they are carrying a little piece of our coral reef story with them.

Now let’s protect the reef — and look good doing it.
