Art should spark joy. When I collect art it’s usually a triggered reaction, I see it, I love it, I want. Often you can see something beautiful and you appreciate it for its beauty and it ends there which is okay! But when it brings you joy that’s really special. That’s true of the work of @heidispector , who I have long admired. Her beautiful totem has stood on Greene Avenue for years. It’s riot of colour and mirrored steel acted like a beacon outside @galeriedebellefeuille , where I’d stop to take a photo so often that Daniel would say “haven’t you got enough photos of that?”. The answer was no. Her work makes me smile. How could I not stop to admire it ? The strict, disciplined lines remind me of the works of other esteemed Quebec artists, but with a playful and modern twist. I truly think art has the power to make people happy. When this piece came up at an estate sale last week, I couldn’t resist. Her work doesn’t often come up on the secondary market, and so even if I’d made promises to myself and others in recent weeks that I was on a purchasing hiatus, I couldn’t sleep on this. I will always love walking by her sculpture on Greene any chance I get, now repositioned a few blocks south near the towering Westmount Square, a modern totem in its own right. I will still stop to take its photo. But I will especially love seeing this on my own walls every single day.
