Join us on Saturday, October 10 for a special gathering for the opening of "Uhengaparaoa, Taonga Tuku Iho: Ancestral Gifts and Contemporary Māori Art" from 2-4:30PM.

This collaborative exhibition connects contemporary Māori textile artists from Whakatōhea with an ancestral kaitaka (cloak) in the Fowler Museum collection. Inspired by the legacy of Uhengaparaoa, a renowned pre-18th century Whakatōhea weaver whose raranga (weaving) skills were shared across Māori communities, this presentation celebrates taonga tuku iho—ancestral treasures and knowledge passed down through generations.

Through artists’ perspectives, cultural presentations, and opportunities for community engagement, the program invites visitors to discover the enduring significance of Indigenous knowledge, stewardship, and storytelling. The afternoon honors the resilience and creativity of Whakatōhea people who carry forward ancient practices while expressing contemporary experiences, identities, and connections to whenua (land), ancestors, and community.

Opening on October 11, "Uhengaparaoa, Taonga Tuku Iho: Ancestral Gifts and Contemporary Māori Art," celebrates Whakatōhea identity, connection to whenua (land) and whakapapa (genealogy), and the resilience of cultural traditions in the face of colonial suppression.

At the heart of the exhibition is a treasured kaitaka (cloak) from the Fowler Museum collection, regarded as an ancestor by the Whakatōhea community. In response, contemporary Whakatōhea artists create works that honor, reinterpret, and extend the knowledge carried through generations. From finely woven kete and kākahu to contemporary works incorporating recycled materials, feathers, and new forms, these artists demonstrate how mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) remains vital and evolving.

As I make plans to return to the US later this year for an art exhibition that I am collaborating on at UCLA, I was searching for any information about me researching in the USA - only to find this on Stanford University's website.

After examining this model wakataua (war canoe) and producing an Historical & Technical Report on it, I was asked to draft a script and record an audio guide.

I'd like to acknowledge the Cantor Arts Center (Stanford University) and their staff for their assistance with this research project. See less

Yesterday, we had the pleasure to welcome Brent Kerehona (@meanderingmaori), a Māori teacher, author and documentary maker, based in Australia, who is doing research on his famous ancestor Hongi Hika, who visited England in 1820, met King George IV, assisted Anglican missionaries in compiling a Maori-English dictionary and negotiated an arms deal. He collected hundreds of high-quality muskets in Sydney on his way back to New Zealand, which he put, from his point of view, to good use, until he died from a musket-ball wound in 1828.

Yesterday, the #NZ Embassy had the privilege to host Māori historian and researcher Brent Kerehona @meanderingmaori, who gave an insightful presentation focused on the role of his tupuna (ancestor), Ngāpuhi chief Moka Te Kaingamatā, at the signing of te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. His research findings uncovered hidden secrets and challenged the status quo narrative regarding te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Treaty of Waitangi. The New Zealand Embassy thanks Brent for his presentation, and our guests: friends of the New Zealand Embassy; from the diplomatic corps and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye, for joining us at this special event.

“ My facial marking is called a moko mataora.

It is a traditional practice done by Māori people of Aotearoa New Zealand.

The designs represent my tribal affiliations, social status, educational background, career, and achievements.

Mine is a combination of a Toa - Warrior, Rangatira - Chief, and a Tohunga - Scholar. “

Proud of this one!

Father's Eyes @kobiedee47 ft. @stanwalker

Indigenous men have been demonised across the world for centuries. A tool used by colonisers to weaken and suppress our people. This song shows that despite all the obstacles we face, we show up and stay strong in the face of it all. A message to all the fathers, grandfathers, uncles and mentors keep showing up and doing your best. We see how DEADLY you are!

On Friday night, our newest exhibition ‘Tidal Kin: Stories from the Pacific’ was officially opened by The Hon. Tony Burke MP. The event was a joyous celebration of the exhibition which reclaims the stories of eight Pacific Islander visitors to Sydney during the 18th and 19th centuries and we were lucky enough to welcome direct descendants of those stories alongside notable guests on the night.
