Kamaal Martin doesn’t have an office or a lane he stays in. He’s the connective tissue in the San Diego art scene. Like water over stones, he moves in government, nonprofit, and philanthropic circles without belonging to any of them. When writer @aaryn_inks asks him what he does, he booms with laughter that shakes her dining room window. “I’m the fucking ecosystem, dude!” Co-founder of @art.power.equity, @kamaalornothing built a career out of intersectional work. Some wins? He persuaded a funders’ collaborative to back an arts-and-health pilot in San Ysidro, where healthcare practitioners prescribe museum visits and watercolor classes instead of pills. He also secured a binational Grantmakers in the Arts conference for San Diego and Tijuana. On the city’s arts commission, he’s pushing to fix a 30-year-old funding formula that rewards organizations for already having money. Hitching his consulting business to a client’s name opens doors his own wouldn’t, and Martin’s candid about the tradeoff. “You can get a lot more done if you’re willing to be flexible about whose name is on it,” he says. Call it playing the game—and Martin does, without apology. He’s not in it to be seen. He’s in it to keep good ideas alive long enough for someone to run with them. Martin is one of 31 people—artists, writers, visionaries, change makers—we profiled in our landmark Arts Issue this September. Read all of them with the link in our bio. We all have a lot to learn from Indigenous knowledge. This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we are deeply grateful to our friends in the community for sharing their stories and wisdom, and for trusting us to help bring them to new audiences. Seeing these stories projected on a block long wall in downtown San Diego was a dream come true. Seeing the surfers of @nativelikewater #Haagua, projected across the side of the California Theater was nothing short of iconic. 🏄🏾‍♂️ Thank you to @mediaartssd and @downtownsandiego for the support that made this projection possible, and endless thanks to our community and our partners for sharing and amplifying these stories. @nativelikewater @cliff_kapono @cannupahanska @daunnette.r @jeremynative @shaandiin @asomejericho @martha.rodriguez.988373 @stan.rodriguez.1 @ajpittman23 @priscilla_lachappa @nichil.rosy @chiffonlark @weareagog @newschoolsvf @sddesignweek @designlabucsd @ccaemuseum @ucsdvisarts @pstinla @birchaquarium
