🏰🎭Let’s Talk About Medieval Drama🎭🏰

Much to my own ignorance, I thought there was a thousand-year gap between Ancient Drama and Early Modern Drama. My editor for my contractual obligation told me about medieval drama as he encouraged me to look into the supernatural in Medieval literature (it somehow had to do with The Tempest). I gave myself a crash-course in Medieval Drama and it is something I should try to familiarize myself with. That said, the actual acting of a Medieval Play would fall under the classical acting category.

I corrected my own mistakes in the subtitles. If I make any additional mistakes, I will correct them in the comments. Also, hello new microphones. I know making reels in my childhood bedroom is literally giving unemployment. If I’m going to be unemployed whilst applying for PhDs, I should practice some research communication skills.

I am an Early Modernist talking about Medieval topics. For more Medieval expertise, I recommend you follow @laceybonarhull_historian @medievallauren @medievaljen @jminieri19 @history_with_talia (give her podcast a listen) @medieval_tom @itslikehistory @lukedaly_author

✨🎄Teignarch Archaeology Advent, Day 22!🎄✨

High on Church Hill above Buckfastleigh lie the evocative ruins of Holy Trinity — but its story goes much deeper than the 13th-century parish church we see today.

Archaeological investigations beneath the medieval fabric have revealed the remains of an earlier church or ecclesiastical building of probable late Anglo-Saxon date, including the foundations of an apse-like structure and burials that suggest a high-status religious community long before the Norman era. This supports the idea that the first Buckfast monastery may have been here before it moved to its later site by the River Dart in the 12th century.

Above these ancient layers stand the shell of the later Holy Trinity Church, devastated by arson in 1992 and now preserved as a ruin. But the stones don’t just speak of destruction — they speak of continuity, from an early Christian site to medieval parish life.

Layered into this archaeological landscape is powerful local folklore. Close to the ruins is the listed Cabell chest tomb, traditionally associated with Squire Richard Cabell, a 17th-century figure said to have been so feared in life that, legend says, black spectral hounds raced across Dartmoor upon his burial. This dramatic tale later helped inspire The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Here, on this hill above Teignbridge, we see history and myth woven together, where ancient stones anchor early Christian devotion and local legend makes the past come alive.

✨Teignarch Archaeology Advent, Day 21! ✨

Hidden on the Dartmoor moorland lies Challacombe, a deserted medieval village preserved as earthworks beneath the grass.

Once a working farming settlement, first recorded in the 15th Century, Challacombe includes visible house platforms, enclosures, trackways, and field systems, showing how medieval communities lived and worked in this challenging upland landscape.

Although the village was later abandoned, archaeology tells a longer story. Test-pitting in 2019 recovered pottery from the 13th–14th centuries onwards, alongside later material, showing continuous use of the landscape over hundreds of years, and maybe even an earlier date to the site!

A powerful reminder that even the quietest places on Dartmoor were once full of life.

✨Indiana Jowan’s Dartmoor Advent, Day 13! ✨

Today we shine a spotlight on one of Dartmoor’s most atmospheric heritage gateways — the Three Crowns Inn in the bustling High Street of Chagford.

This remarkable inn stands in a Grade II* listed building that traces its origins back to the medieval period, originally constructed as a manor house and later serving travellers, merchants, and tinners crossing the moor. Its imposing granite façade, enormous oak beams and cosy fireplaces speak to centuries of life and local history.

Chagford itself was a key medieval Stannary town, central to the tin industry that shaped Dartmoor’s economy and social structure. The Three Crowns would have hosted a rich mix of people — from local tinners and market folk to long-distance travellers.

And of course, Dartmoor’s legendary side persists: during the English Civil War, Sidney Godolphin, a Royalist poet and soldier, was mortally wounded in a skirmish centred around this building and folklore holds that his ghost still roams its halls.

Whether you’re here for the heritage, the food, the fireside snug, or the storytelling, the Three Crowns remains a living link between Dartmoor’s past and present.

👑 A Controversial King is Crowned! 👑

#OTD: 06/07/1483

On this day, Richard III was crowned alongside his wife, Anne Neville, at Westminster Abbey, London. His coronation followed the declaration that his nephew, Edward V, and his brother, Richard, Duke of York - the infamous “Princes in the Tower” - were illegitimate. The event was reportedly a lavish affair, featuring a grand procession from the Tower of London, which was then a royal palace, to the Abbey. However, Richard lacked public support, as many viewed his crowning as an act of usurpation, believing he had stolen the throne from the rightful heir, Edward V. This widespread discontent ultimately led to open rebellion, culminating in the Battle of Bosworth two years later.
