Maye.
Ok I’m back, I took a break from social / a break in general. Taking time to learn new things art and non art things, as well as exploring new mediums. I hope everyone has been well and taking care of themselves despite all that’s been going.

Glad to be able to share that I've had the incredibly good fortune & privilege to be able to collaborate with @hulu, creating artwork for this legendary film/documentary, Summer of Soul (@summerofsoulmovie).

The film is about the Harlem Cultural Festival, a series of concerts with thousands of attendees that took place in 1969 ( the same year as Woodstock) & contains iconic performances never seen until now.

Everyone should definitely check out this documentary today, and if you've watched it already, watch it again!!

**My intention when creating this poster design, is to display a feeling of not only celebration and victory, but also a subtle sense of defiance. I opted to use the fist to clearly display that immediate feeling of recognizable defiance. Also by turning the word “soul” into the fingers, I feel it conveys the message that soul is not only a part of us as black people but also a major component in how we express ourselves and deliver our message (as those fingers grip the microphone). I chose to angle the fist to convey this feeling of forceful motion, gripping the microphone in the air to let all of our voices be heard. I feel this message sits well in the 60’s and the message can fit well into our society today.**

🚌 This installation made of a school bus. To me, it’s a daunting commentary on the education system. History on the art: “The elevator is the size of a freight elevator, about 20-feet-deep with a 10-to-15-foot-long undulating ceiling. Its art was the first stage in a larger project in the building when it was a Macy’s showroom done from 1991-93 by Swing, Veronis and Carter, who worked together in the 1980s and ‘90s and were known as the “Three J’s,” often using found metal objects in their work, according to Veronis.
The overall project in The Factory involved artwork throughout the lobby’s 18,000 square-foot hallways. It was all done in a similar fantastical style as the elevator art, which the artists created first. Veronis says the work in the elevator “started to morph into a womb, or the inside of your head,” adding that it “gestated our ideas and spilled out of the elevator, up out into the lobby...- The building owner decided in 1994 to remove the artwork, which the three artists fought by going to court and claiming it was protected by the recently passed Visual Artists Rights Act. They eventually lost on appeal when the court ruled that the art was made for hire and therefore not protected, after which the building was sold to new owners who also wanted to remove the work. “ - Hidden Gems 📸 @annalustberg
