Yesterday, I lost a big chunk of my heart. Floyd, my 12-year-old Boxer and sweet gentle giant, crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

At 8 weeks old, Floyd became our first family dog. Three days later, his littermate Dixie joined him. They were as different as night and day. Floyd’s elevator struggled to reach the top floor, while Dixie’s busted through the roof on its way to Mars. Yet they were inseparable. At the vet, if one left the room, the other whined nonstop until they came back.

We named him Floyd because he was a Boxer, as in Mayweather. Get it? He never barked for nine years, then found his voice and used it often, and randomly.

There was no sweeter or more devoted companion. His big brown eyes melted your heart, and his silliness made you laugh on your darkest days. He didn’t do it on purpose. He did it because he was Floyd. Following was his superpower. He stuck to you like glue, so you were never alone and never lonely.

Floyd was also a survivor. Diagnosed with cancer at 6 months old, he fought like a knight in armor for nearly 12 years, with a quiet strength we should all aspire to. In his senior years the battle grew harder, and the cancer finally won.

He was seemingly allergic to land, sea, and air. Potatoes and white fish were all he could eat. No treats. No nothing. So yesterday, as we said goodbye, we gave him his first and only McDonald’s cheeseburger. He scarfed it down like it was the best cheeseburger on the planet. To him, it was. Knowing he crossed the bridge with a belly full of happy food makes the pain a little easier to bear.

Our hearts are broken, especially Dixie’s. But in my mind’s eye, I see Floyd at the peak of the Rainbow Bridge, healthy and strong, no gray in his chin, turning back as if to say, “Goodbye, Mom. I love you. I’m going to be alright.” Then he runs to the other side, where his little brother Beaux, who crossed three years ago at just 6, is waiting to show him everything he’s learned. One last loving look my way, and off they go together.

I love you, Floyd, and I will miss you dearly. Beaux, thank you for showing him the way. I love you both so very much.
