Join us in congratulating the 32 writers across Canada who have made the longlist of the 2025 CBC Short Story Prize! 🎉

The longlist was selected from more than 2,300 entries. Submissions are processed by a two-tiered system: the initial texts are screened by a reading committee chosen for each category from a group of editors and writers across the country.

The shortlist, selected by this year’s jury, Conor Kerr @conordanielkerr, Kudakwashe Rutendo @kudakwashe_rs and Michael Christie @michaelchristie, will be announced on April 10 and the winner will be announced on April 17.

The winner of the 2025 CBC Short Story Prize will receive $6,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts @canada.council, a two-week writing residency at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity @banffcentre and their work will be published on CBC Books. They will also appear on a future episode of #Bookends with Mattea Roach @mattearoach.

Head to cbcbooks.ca for more info and check out the CBC Poetry Prize, open for submissions now!

| Meet Our January Writer in Residence: Michelle Sinclair |

This month, we are delighted to feature @michelle.sinclair.7737 as our Writer in Residence. A published author, Michelle has an impressive background in policy work on human rights issues and has lived in many beautiful corners of the world, including Australia, Bangladesh, Costa Rica, France, Switzerland, and the United States. She lives in Ottawa with her husband, three kids and three pets.

Michelle’s writing spans novels, literary reviews, essays, and short stories. Her debut novel, Almost Visible, showcases her unique voice and storytelling talent.

In her thoughtful guided writing activity for this month’s edition, Michelle invites us to take a stroll down memory lane. Through her prompt, she encourages us to revisit cherished moments from the past, helping us reflect and reconnect with our own stories.

A heartfelt thank you to Michelle for her contribution to this month’s activity book, which has been shared with hospital patients and staff across the UK, spreading the comfort and creativity of writing far and wide.
