Anyone from Gujarat knows that the moment the music starts playing, everything else fades into the background!

Garba is in OUR BLOOD!

But living with diabetes means your body doesn’t care about your passions. Yesterday was a harsh reminder of how unpredictable and exhausting this life is!

After walking to the venue and giving it my all for 6 solid rounds of garba, I felt that sudden shift. The reality of this condition is that it drains you TWICE (or maybe more!) as fast as anyone else on the field. On top of that, I’m already pushing through a hairline ankle fracture and three ligament tears that haven’t healed yet- again, all thanks to diabetes complicating the healing process!

Pulled out my monitor, and boom- 300+!

It’s incredibly frustrating because as I’ve gotten older, it has only worsened. The margin for error is smaller now. I had to stand there and make the brutal calculation: play a few more tracks because my heart wants to, or stop right now so I don’t end up in a hospital bed tomorrow.

The HARDEST part?
Year after year, choosing your health means dealing with the judgment of people who have no clue. They think you just decided to get decked up to take photos, assuming you don’t actually want to play. They don’t understand that you’d give ANYTHING to be in that circle right now, or that you’re standing there with an unhealed foot and dangerously high numbers!

And through it all, you have to plaster on a smile so nobody else has to carry the weight of what you’re feeling.

Diabetes forces you into survival mode when you just want to celebrate.

But through all of this exhaustion, there is a silver lining! I am incredibly grateful for the few chosen friends and family members who truly try to understand.

It’s hard, it’s exhausting, but we will keep fighting. ✨
