Sublet (2026) BA Graphic Design Graduation Work by Lucas Buendía

Sublet explores commercial intrusion into the domestic space through a multi-sensory bedroom experience. Every element in the work is a play on some structure of the home. Portraits hang on the walls, a fake window overlooks an idyllic beach, and a bed invites you to use the space as a resting space, but every surface is also used as a container for some kind of commercial language. The construction of the installation takes inspiration from billboard structures and packing boxes, while the stripped cardboard walls should emulate a typical household wallpaper. All imagery used in the installation comes from photos I took of retail displays or signage in my local community, highlighting the way advertisements are internalized and carried into the home subconsciously. The installation is paired with a soundscape blending radio commercials with domestic ambient noise (See last slide).

Structural skeleton for my bachelor graduation installation, ‘Room for Rent’, amplifying the carryover of commercial language, signage, and imagery into domestic space. Very excited to share this installation in its final form soon. Come visit WdKA’s Graduation show opening 9AM Thursday 9th July at Katoenhuis, Rotterdam. Show is on until Saturday 11th July!

The construction phase of this project was a collaboration between @bu3nds & @certifiedmees Massively grateful to Mees for his insights, support, expertise, and genius 3D rendering abilities.

The structural logic of the design refers to my previous work, the B27 Industrial Desk, using three-way steel joinery to achieve a multidirectional load transfer. This safely supports the elevated floor, along with multiple visitors inside.

The showing in London was done in close collaboration with Leanne Ghesquiere, a dear friend of mine who does curatorial studies in London, and Mees Noordzij, another dear long-standing friend from my hometown with an engineering background. We have been talking about the project since December 2025, and worked remotely via video meetings, until we saw each other again in April 2026 to set up. From the start until the end, working with them felt immensely natural and easy.

For the installation and on-site support provided to Mees, I would like to express my thanks to Alastair Gleeson, Julian Spanbroek, Marijn van Nunen, and Arsenii Bychkov. For the promotion and on-site assistance of Leanne, I would like to thank Antoine Chaudet and Rychon Tokromo.
