Women in Shuffling: Battle Mode ⚔️

Earlier this year, someone asked me, "Do women ever make it to Finals?" This question inspired me to give more visibility to women in shuffling, and it demonstrates the continued importance of documenting our dance's history to share different facets of our culture with others and new generations of dancers. Women don't only make it to finals, they win! Let's give these women who have earned Ws their flowers 💐.

Winning battles is only one way to inspire, though. Shout out to the women who battle regardless of the outcome. You never know who you're inspiring just by showing up. Shout out also to women organizers, judges, teachers, battle DJs, MCs, and all who create these opportunities and cultivate safe spaces for expression.

While I've done my best to connect with different communities and create a comprehensive US timeline of the last 5y, it's important to acknowledge an inability capture everything (ex: street/undocumented battles). We can use this as a starting point to stitch the story together while recognizing the best way to understand it is by experiencing it with the people that keep our culture going ❤️‍🔥.

Read something the other day that said: “I think if you are making 10 year old you proud and giving 80 year old you something to reminisce about, I think you are doing ok” 💙

This year’s solar return was spent with those who I hold very close to my heart 🥹

7 year old Mars (last pic) spent her first bday hiding away from everyone because she was scared celebrating her bday was a sin. If only she can see how much our life has changed and how beautiful celebrating life can be 💫

Truly an honor to be playing a proper industrial closing set after @kayzomusic in THE CAGE. I saw Kayzo for my first rave when he opened for Flux Pavilion at Echostage many moons ago, so it’s incredibly surreal to be sharing a lineup with him now.

Also hyped to be sharing the decks with my friend @firebunny making her DC debut 🎉

Lots of new unreleased music for this one - y’all better keep me locked in there ⛓️🐊⛓️

Hulaween Take 2 🎃

So much to be thankful for, so many full circle moments to reflect on… Firstly, the community of women I have been introduced to through work art operations for music festivities this summer! Absolutely Unreal! (@ruts_10110 @tina @carter_vibes_ @_abadcultleader @gabrielle.lush bird@aron_claassen_prairie caile @meg_dulin @jennadotson Shade Rae Grace @tiffytornado ) beyond impressed to the point of feeling like a fan girl, and maybe even a slight girl crush on one. This show specifically though, I really tried to embrace and force myself to reach out to these allies. The creativity and empowerment is a special force to experience. The love and care, the grounding, the connection, to be seen if even for a moment. They were my rocks for the final weeks of the month. The men alike that I worked with, a special experience for sure. A true highlight to work alongside and befriend Mark , @murdoch55 , and @chimtim1 . The deep conversations shared with @perrilus and @iceyticey , were healing. Lovely memories made along side Jamie. @wakethefarmup for always being so authentic and true, never have I not learned something alongside you and feel grouned. @rudashibpm a true insane full circle moment; from stumbling into the most hype set I have ever, to crowd surfing you on a couch to being teammates, the most surreal fan girl moment of the year; and the sweetest most authentic human! The knowledge, the laughs, and the safety I felt with these lads was special for me. Something my soul needed. Entering festival world wasnt easy, but it’s proving worthy. This one in particular had many challenges faced head on in so many ways; to say we all grew and learned, changed and morphed, would be an understatement. At moments when my world seemed to be disappearing, I was blessed with so many grounding angels. Eternally thankful. Im still processing… I finally feel at home again in a community and can only pray I’m welcomed back over and over more and more.
